Which of these may be better for gaming or are they both just the same

A Broadband connection of 512.256k with a 50-1 connection ratio.
    or

    A Broadband connection of 512/256k with a 20-1 ratio.

I have a choice but dont know which is better ?

Actually, as long as you're not hosting, dial up is fine at HyperLobby at least. I'm not sure what you mean by the 20-1 thing, but look for a service that offers the best upload speed to help you host games or communications programs.

I hear people brag all the time that they've got like, 3MB per second download speed. I've got it and my opinion is kinda, big friggin' deal! That's a 3MB per second maximum capacity. I've yet to find the server that gave me information faster than 880KB per second. That's not even a third of my download capacity. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with only 245KB per second upload capacity. It's good, but if the ISP companies want me to switch, they'll have to do better than that because paying for download capacity that I never use is worthless!

Thank you for your reply LuckyBoy1

I am aware that game speed is set by the lowest speed so if you have a 2mb download but only a 256k upload .. I think that means you can only play by the lower speed of 256k .

The Ratio I refer to is the ammount of people allocated to Broadband servers i.e. 50 people sharing 1 server.

But there is also a Ratio of 20 people using one server ?

I dont know too much about broadband ... but someone in here may ?

Actually, you're not "stuck" with the lower number, but you are limited by the upload speed. You will still download information from other players in the game at the faster number, but you won't be able to send them back information so fast. Download speed is not an issue as far as I'm concerned due to the problem waiting for others to upload the information to you.

50-1 and 20-1, now it comes back to me. While this can be important in some areas where everyone on the block has and extensively uses cable internet service, it usually is not as important as some would believe. If you live in an financially well off suburban area, then yes, this can become a problem at peak usage hours. But if you live in a poor neighborhood like mine, you'll be about the only one using the service in your area.

More important than 20-1 is how close you are to the junction boxes and switching networks. Again, living good works against you here because those industrial type boxes, sheds and buildings are generally not found in the higher end neighborhoods. I've used internet connection speed testing sites and have determined that no matter what time of day my upload speed stays ay 245KB per second and the slowest I've ever seen my connection test at was 2.4MB per second. That download speed is still far in excess of the speeds any server would give me the information at.

By the way, to save you some money, did you know that "broadband" works by using unused television bandwidth? What does this mean and how can you save money knowing this? Well, the cable company can't seperate the "broadband signal" from the analog television signal sent to your house. As a result, if you call up the cable company, you might consider buying only cable internet service. Then what you do is take a coax splitter and run one to the television(s) and another to the cable modem box. This way you get analog cable TV and broadband service for only the broadband price. I'm not saying I'd ever do this; especially to an industry that forks out big bucks to politicians to keep their fat monopolies! However, I can tell you for a fact that it does work!

I'd agreee. I live in the middle of knowhere, so I'm the only one on BB around here. The telephone guy had to come out and install the junction box which is at the bottom of my drive lol so i'm sort of 1-1 hehe. Just thought i'd share that.
