Questions:
1. Are you running Win 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise, and is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
2. Which version of Riven are you trying to install, the original CD version or the version from the Myst 10th Anniversary Edition?

I have the same problem, but for me it's Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Any suggested course of action?
Thanks,

My copy is the original Riven on CD.
In general,
1. Install Riven to your C: drive.
-- a. Be certain that Riven saves its game progress files to your C: drive.
-- b. If you have a very small C: that's reserved for system files only, install Riven to D:. Be certain that Riven saves its game progress files to D:.
2. Start Riven from a fresh boot.
-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with **full Administrator privileges** (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications. (Open the Control Panel, and select User Accounts. Your User Name should show Administrators under Group.)
-- b. Disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs running in the background.
-- c. If you have only a software firewall, do NOT disable it.
-- d. Do NOT run any other programs before starting Riven.
3. Never boot up with a CD or DVD in the disc drive.
4. If the Riven disc autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
5. Always start Riven with the Desktop shortcut/start icon, NOT from the CD menu.
Suggestions, to do in the order shown:
1. Download and install the latest Win 7 64-bit drivers for your system. Don't just assume that you already have the latest drivers - check it! And be certain to download the 64-bit driver packages, NOT the 32-bit! Reboot after installation of each driver package is complete.
-- a. For video drivers:
----- 1. If you have integrated graphics (video chipset on the motherboard), go to your PC or motherboard manufacturer's website to download the latest video driver package. Especially if you have a laptop.
----- 2. If you have a separate video card, go to the card manufacturer's website to download the latest video driver package.
-- b. For sound drivers:
----- 1. If you have integrated sound (sound chipset on the motherboard), go to your PC or motherboard manufacturer's website to download the latest sound driver package. Especially if you have a laptop.
----- 2. If you have a separate sound card, go to the card manufacturer's website to download the latest sound driver package.
-- c. For mouse and touchpad drivers:
----- 1. If you have a laptop, go to the manufacturer's website for the latest touchpad and mouse driver package(s).
----- 2. If you have a desktop and it came with a desktop-manufacturer-branded mouse, go to the manufacturer's website for the latest mouse driver package.
----- 3. If you bought your mouse separately, go to the mouse manufacturer's website for the latest driver package.
When all drivers are updated, start Riven from a fresh boot as per steps 2 through 5 under "in general", above. If updated drivers don't help, proceed to the next suggestion.
2. Run the Program Compatibility troubleshooter and use it to re-install Riven. See
Make older programs run in this version of Windows for details, in particular, "If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc ...."
-- a. First, uninstall Riven using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs utility.
----- 1. See Uninstall or change a program for details.
----- 2. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see Turn Windows features on or off.
-- b. Then reboot, and re-install Riven using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter ("If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc ....").
----- 1. Select Windows 98 / Windows ME for "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?"
When re-installation is complete, reboot, and start Riven from a fresh boot as per steps 2 through 5 under "in general", above.

Hi,
If anyones still lookin for a solution for win7x64 and original riven DVD (Only installs in 32bit) heres what I did. Works fine so far 'without compatibility mode!'
Ran Virtual pc 2007 with win 95c
Installed vm addons from vpc2004sp1 (the 2007 addons dont work with win95)
Shared my desktop folder of my actual pc in edit/settings so I can copy files between vm and my pc
Installed the riven dvd to program files/riven DVD (Also let it do QT and DX - doesnt matter)
Copied the riven DVD folder (in program files) to my shared desktop folder.
Opened the copied folder on my desktop and ran riven.exe
Worked fine! No compatibility settings! Let me know how you all go!
Is there any Myst or Riven game available that will run on Windows 7 ? Are there upgrades in the works for them to run on Windows 7 ?
Welcome to the Forums.
Please note that it isn't necessary to post in red to get answers to your questions, and doing so won't get you answers any faster - actually, to the contrary, since most of us don't appreciate being shouted at!
Q. Is there any Myst or Riven game available that will run on Windows 7 ?
A. Have you read through this thread, tried the suggestions if you're having problems, and/or searched for Windows 7 in this Forum for hints/tips on installation and playing Myst/Riven/Exile? Also, have you visited the other Myst Forums and searched for Windows 7 for hints/tips on installation and playing? (Uru Technical Help & Advice, Myst IV Revelation Technical Help, and Myst V End of Ages- Technical Help & Advice)
Q. Are there upgrades in the works for them to run on Windows 7 ?
A. No. These are all old games, and spending resources to fit them to the latest operating system from Microsoft isn't justified.
