Cannot start Brotherhood. Steam Version. | Forums

Please excuse my poor mood for now, I'm really annoyed.

I recently purchased Assassin's Creed 2: Brotherhood; and have spent all day watching the progress bar tick over and eagerly awaiting the installed version to play. "It's going to be awesome!" I told myself. "All of my friends who've already played and finished it on the PS3 have told me it's brilliant!" So I was eager, to say the least.

Of course, since I'm here, I've got a problem or two.

Preamble over!

The important details:
I have a Steam version. That means it's installed at "E:\STEAMOMFG\steamapps\common\assassins creed brotherhood" STEAMOMFG because I didn't like steam back when I installed it.
I have never been able to run Brotherhood. From the Steam entry list and from the folder. Neither ACBSP or ACBMP work, we get the same error for each.
"ACBSP/ACBMP has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.
-> Close the program."

Things I have tried!:
Backing up via Steam and reinstalling.
Try to reinstall Direct X from the website. It tells me I'm completely updated.
Reinstalling Graphics drivers.
Completely disabling everything in my msconfig startup; even non-microsoft and non-Nvidia services.
Asking Steam to verify the game integrity. This *does* give me a lead. It says "One file was corrupted, and will be reaquired." Then it pops up with "Assassin's Creed... has finished downloading." Next time I try to start it, it says "Performing First Time setup" And gets to the InstallScript setup Launcher, the 5/5 in the first time setup. It ticks over for a while, and then closes the "first time setup" window, and ACBSP has it's usual hissy fit on startup. I'm not sure what this means, or even if the InstallScript setup works. I can't even see the game launcher.

The next step is to completely redownload the game, but I seriously do not have enough download limit to do that twice in a day, I'll try it again in my off-peak period and report back with the results.

Any hints for the woes of the determined PC gamer?

Been getting the APBSC.exe error since last nite. I cant get in on either my laptop or my main rig. Now it tells me via steam the game is unavailable??? WTF!! Also I did the verify integrity check and it keeps redownloading a file! Each time I check it.

I got an idea, that might work:
Create a new Useraccount on your WindowsOS.
Completely deinstall AC:B und reinstall it on the new Account. Now it should work - but only there.

This is the problem ive got as well. Real shame that ive paid £20 for a game that i cant play. If anyone knows how this can be resolved please let me know.

Thanks for the offer of help but ive already spent 4 hours trying to get it to work and im not willing to waste any more of my 3 day holiday trying to get it to work for the price of £20 its not worth ruining a whole day just to get it to work.

However i will say its not an ubisoft problem, its a steam problem. I have AC1 and AC2 on physical copy from a store and they work perfectly. I also have other ubisoft games that use the launcher like splintercell and they work fine to.

The problem is it installs fine, and as usual for a steam game it does the first play setup with includes direct x setup, microsoft network setup and the installscript launcher (the latter of which i think is the problem).

So here are the steps

1) install steam version

2) run the game, it starts the first time setup

3) then it tries to run the game. Win 7 blue circle spins for a few seconds then disapears and nothing happens.

4) verify files on steam. If finds one bad file and re-aquires it.

5) click steam shortcut again. Now you can go back and read again from step 2 and keep looping. The vicious circle begins again.

Ive tried reinstalling, ive tried deleting the ubisoft launcher and all its files and reinstalling from a seperate exe file. Ive tried clicking the exe in the game folder rather then the steam shortcut. Nothing seems to work. Obviously it has something to do with steam not installing one of the 5 steps correctly and corrupting the download otherwise it wouldnt keep finding one corrupt file and keep re-aquiring it.

Problem solved for me, some very nice guy on the steam forums worked it out and heres how it works

Possible solution is to manually create a save game folder in:

C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Saved Games\Assassin's Creed Brotherhood\Saved

for Windows 7. Hope this helps anyone having the issue since I didn't find the solution here or on Ubisoft's forums when I searched.

Not sure if its a game, steam or win 7 problem but obviously it must check for this folder on win 7 and if it isnt created it doesnt work, so happy i can now play the game i paid for!!

Manually creating this folder fixed my launching problem for me.

I was getting this error message in my Windows Event log each time I tried to launch it:

This does not work for me. I do however get the same problem when steam starts the launcher, the diretX installer Runs each time I start the game than continues through all 5 steps.--whether or not this is really installing I have no idea. after this step the launcher opens with all the info for my account and so on, so far no problems.

* click play and starts the game.

now here is my problem.
when the Ubisoft logo doesn't lock up it will continue all the way to the menu screen-- well sorta. it will load the first frame with out any information on screen and than lock up my computer. this is as far as I have Got in 4 hours.

now. I have tried everything listed so far in this forum. can ANYONE help me?

changing the "/Saved" did nothing as the game will remake the folder "/SAVES"
