Thread: How about destroying towns | Forums

  1. #1
One thing I've always disliked about this great series (excluding 4, I never could get into that one so I'm not sure) is that opposite army types could fight together. Sure, there was a minor morale hit but who cares.

Does it really make sense that angels and devils would fight side by side.

I believe it would be a great change for the series to actually destroy the town you smash to pieces with a catapult and be forced to rebuild your own type from ground up.

NO MIXING OF TROUP TYPES except if your allied with other towns.

    Anyone else agree?

I'd like to hear some opinions on this. I've never posted to a game forum until now but this issue has bothered me since I played HOMM 1 when it was new!

Well, actually they applied the thing in the Heroes III un-official add-on "In the Wake of Gods". You might wanna check that out.

As for Heroes V, it might be an interesting thing, but can be risky. And we anyway shouldn't be able to destroy a whole town in one day. That would be stupid. You work at a town for months. A guy takes it and destroys everything, and then try to take it back (if there's anything to take back anymore). Maybe just one building per day.

Such an option (destroying one building per day) would have really worked in Heroes IV actually (more than any of the others), because of the choice system. Who would want, after having a fully equipped army (all slots filled by cyclops, behemoths, harpies, berzekers, centaurs and three heroes) to recruit ogres from the newly conquered town (that would even slow the whole army down, not to mention giving up one hero or creature type)?

I think this is a terrible idea. Imagine a small map with only a few towns(2 for both sides). You take over one of your opponents towns for just a little bit before his army comes and takes it back. Ooops game is pretty much over because you have 2 towns vs his one for the rest of the game and there is nothing he can do to get another one so his only chance is to take one of your towns ASAP. There would be absolutely no back and forth games anymore it would be become a game where the first person to take over one of his opponents towns wins hands down.

edit: didn't notice that he mentioned being able to rebuild, but still don't like the idea because it would still be way too powerful to be able to force somebody to rebuild a whole town. The system that has been in place works very well, so I say keep it.

These are good points. My main thing isn't so much demolishing a town as it is having enemies fight together like it is nothing. As for the time it takes to destroy a town, consider that you can take down the walls in one fight (at least on the screen) and that you can go from level 1 to 7 creature buildings in just one week if you have the resources.
Maybe having one group alignment (unless allies) per hero would be a better idea or just have the new troups generated only be able to defend the castle. I just think it would make a better atmosphere though keeping enemies and allies separated.

i think demolishing towns would be a bad gameplay mechanic because it takes away from strategy rather than making it deeper. not only does it favour the player who is already stronger, but it would probably ruin the economics of the end-game as well. rather, it is *much* more of a challenge to make a captured town either unassailable or irrelevant.

as for mixing units of different towns, i really like it because it rewards risk, which makes the game more exciting to play. mixing also presents more opportunities for unorthodox gameplay and creating truly interesting armies with qualities that an enemy is unable to compensate for. what sounds *boring* to me is adhereing to some racial logic just for its own sake, which is what you are proposing.

Ok, I'll end my discussion on this matter with this last piece.

As far as "racial logic"? I think you read a *little* too far into that obiter. I mean, why do both devils and angels have attack bonuses against each other (HOMM 3)? My assumption is that, considering the names of these creatures, that they don't particularly like each other but maybe that's because they bare an obvious religious resemblance.

And that is exactly why I think it is crazy that you can have them fighting side by side. The destroying town idea I did get from reading about WOG (haven't played it) but I should have stated this differently. I don't care about town destruction really. I just think it doesn't make sense having certain creatures together. If all towns were neutral, then this wouldn't be an issue.

I do understand, however, how mixing can be interesting - I've done it enough myself.

No...... please no... lets keep Heroes V a homm game, and not make it warcraft III.

And how would allowing 1 or 2 destructions a day (for gold cost) turn H5 into Warcraft 3?

Well, I disagree with that. The current morale effects are good enough. I've already posted in another thread that I think these d&d like alignment rules are not good for a strategy game like HoMM. And, also the game doesn't force you to mix them, dont't want to mix angels with devils and vampires...? Well, just don't.
