Thread: Quick mission 7 | Forums

Im new to sh4, and i am practicing on quick missions. In number 7'Tokyo-Saipan convoy' how many ships do i need to sink??
Ive gotten about 8 merchants and a pesky destroyer, but ran out of torps, I think i maybe left 1 or 2 merchants.
Is it a matter of sinking every merchant to complete??

Been trying to figure that one out my own self. All the objective says is 'Inflict heavy losses on the convoy heading for Saipan.' I wonder if you don't have to sink the cruiser as well as a buttload of merchants....Me, I've never come through that mission alive. I have a fatal habit of staying at periscope depth too long and getting a destroyer right up my posterior. :P

    Yeh same same.
I can get through the destroyer cordon and literally cruise under the cruiser, take out the far 3 merchants( 3 lines of merchants in convoy), manouver and fire off aft tubes to take out three more from middle line in convoy. By this time ive been at periscope depth for some minutes, with destroyers bearing down on me. I use the sinking wrecks to evade destroyers and manage to take out maybe 2-3 more merchants. By now ive run out of torps(accounting for a couple of misses), but I still dont get the mission completed ending.
Do i need to sink the cruiser?, do i need to take out every merchant?(i think theres about 12).
PLUS, I have managed to do all that and still escape the convoys cordon and cruise away with empty tubes.
It would help to have more info in the mission objectives.

    Hi Guys

I've not played this particular mission myself, but checked the objectives for the mission in the ME and they were sink the Shinano.

In case you are not familar with the Shinano, it was supposed to be the third battleship in the Yamato class but after Midway it was decided to convert the battleship into an aircraft carrier. The long and short of the story is that she was sunk on her maiden voyage from Tokyo Bay heading to the Inland Sea when she was attacked and sunk by the USS Archerfish.

    Hi Tambor198,
Ok, I can do that. I guess ill have another crack at the mission. Sinking the Shinano, which i gather is the largest warship in the convoy, then as many merchants as possible , will i hope complete the mission.
Cheers, ill get back to forum with results.

remember, a yamato class battleship needs 8-12 torps to sink so keep that in mind when setting up your shots because you need time to reload and fire before shes out of range. if you do sink her you wont have many torps left

I had another go at quick mission 7 and still no luck.
I can sneak in, sink the cruiser with 3 torps( not the 8-12 i thought i needed), then proceeded to sink 5 merchants. There was alot of weaving and dodging the destroyers and such, lots of diving and such allowing time for reloads. Plus the time waiting for the ships to feel safe enough to start maintaining a steady course.
Eventually I ran out of torps, as some merchants wouldnt go down with just 1 shot(others did). And i did miss a few times with the ships doing alot of zig zagging.
And yet I still didnt get the mission completed page.
Do need to sink more warships? more merchants?

i'm not that familiar with the mission.

i think ive tried it once or twice.

a nifty trick that i like to do... get close to the escorts (silent running, just above the first thermal layer, not too deep or they won't hear them)and use a decoy to fool the escorts and draw them away from the other ships so you can sneak up and take them out before the escorts even know whats going on.

you may have to adjust your depth accordingly (dive)on your approach because, chances are, after you release those suckers, the escorts are going to b-line it to where you launched them, and will probably drop charges right over you as they go to see what the hub-ub is.

hopefully you'll be deep enough by then that it wont be a problem. then all you have to do is continue on to the other ships (silently & slowly,or your ruse will be for naught, the escorts should continue to pepper the area of the decoy w/charges,while your're way ahead of them, getting ready to put the smack-down on the convoy) and go to periscope depth as you get close enough to attempt an attack.

if you miss and need to reload, dive as deep as possible,go to all stop, break from silent running, and just sit there to allow your crew to reload your tubes.

it also helps to know what you're shooting at.

find the draft of the contact in the recognition manual, and make the depth of your torps a few feet below this value, and set them to magnetic detonation. if you do it right, you'll blow a huge hole right underneath your targeting, sinking it more efficiently in one or two torps per merchant, definitely takes a few more for bigger warships or cruisers.

you can repeat this as much as you want as long as you're quiet, and don't use your periscope too much, not giving away your actual position in other words. (if you need to find their position, set your hydrophones to track them,or just follow them manually from the station this way.)they shouldn't see,or hear you coming,if you're careful.

of course, this is only one of a few techniques i like to use,and it ain't gonna work if your boat isn't equipped w/ decoys, obviously.

    hope this helps. good luck.

    Thx green_abobo,
I will definitely be able to refine my attack with some of your tips.
Funnily enough i have been able to use the decoys well, deploying them then diving and changing course to move away from the destroyers.
One of my best tricks was when i crippled the cruiser until it was limping along at about 2 knots,(by all rights it should have sunk then as the stern and aft deck was way below the water, but it kept chugging on), then i actually dived down to about 150 feet and hid under the cruiser while i reloaded my tubes. the destroyers were busy with my decoys, and i think the crippled cruiser drowned out my noise.
BUT, even after i came back up to PD, loosed of another salvo, sunk more merchants and the cruiser, i still didnt get end of mission page.
That tally was 6 merchants, the cruiser, and 1 pesky destroyer who i sunk as a distraction, before i ran out of torps.
I think you are right in setting depths on torps to try for a 1 shot kill(which i have got on occasions), leaving more torps for more kills.
I may have ben only 1 kill away from end of mission, but of course i will never know that as it doesnt give any more details
Cheers, i will have another shot at it today.
