HUGE dissapointment. Beautiful graphics but FAR FAR to linear. Unlockables are fun but still. This is a game for perfectionists to replay the QTEs over and over trying to get everything but for regular gamers even Tenchu fans like me, rent it and forget it.

I don't know what "QTE" means, but I couldn't aggree more. It's WAY too linear (can barly get on rooftops, although you ca if you're in EXACTLY the right place to perform this basic action) and limited even by comparison to the last tenchu for the same system (PSP in my case).
Also I don't trust exchanging money over the internet, because of problems with my address I don't trust anything getting to my house and there's not a place to rent games (to my knowledge) within 7 miles of my house so because ALL the tenchus (1, 2, 3, Fatal Shadows and Time of the assassins) played similar prior to this I went off faith and bought the damn thing for £29.99...gutted much lol!?
Further more, the analog stick was invented for a reason, so why do I have to hold "L" to run..oh, that's right, yeah, because then there would be 2 button what do nothing! (select does naff all...and if I have to unlock something for it to work, then I don't know which is worse lol)
I think I've going to trade it for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
This was my initial reaction in a thread I created (and just deleted) asking how to play as Onikage but couldn't hold my "tounge" even there (yeah, I was so annoyed I mecame a member mainly to hopefully complain in the right place lol):
To the Makers/producers of this game: you know that old phrase "if it isn't broke, don't fix it"...DON'T TOUCH IT THEN! The only thing what needed fixing was possibly the button for "stealth" (stick to walls etc) as it was a problem sometimes crouching next to walls what with it being the same button for crouch as it is/was to stick to walls (great fix, you've done the same thing with another button!)...just feeling severly robbed of £29.99 right now as in essence I went in expecting to buy a tenchu game, but what I got was Tenchu: Chaos Theory, a mash up of a splinter cell, Turn based RPG, Tenchu, and mini game compilation...wth!
...basically once I've shown this to someone else who may be foolishly interested and saved him some money, I'm trading it in, which is a shame, because it will be the 1st time I have EVER traded in a tenchu game since I started playing them on the PlayStation 1!
It's annoying too (if you couldn't tell from the above) because ninja games seemed to be going in the right direction with great gameplay from Shinobido (not the PSP version, that was more glitch ridden than this one and had a storyline what made the Mr men look well thought out) and Tenchu 3 for the PS2. Further more, once I got used to the new shorter draw distance (I think it's called), Tenchu Time Of The Assassins proved you could make a decent ninja game for the PSP as there is at least 4 MAIN storylines, you can create your own story (with customisable level opening scrolling text and sound effects too just for starters) and it's 2 player co-op! Can you do ANY of that on Shadow Assassins...heck, there's that much missing, even though the PSP has an analogue stick (and limited buttons even by comparison to the original Playstation 1 pads) it looks like they've tried to cover up this fact by having the "L" button to run lol.
...So yeah, in short I usually try to offer constructive critisism, but there are so many faults in this game I wouldn't know where to start. So if there isn't a reply to how I play as Onikage by the outside of next Monday (which is already more patience than the game's worth), I'm trading it in. Either way, if the gameplay is anything like this for the next tenchu (REALLY limited and guided/linear even after you turn the help off), as much as it saddens me to say so...count me out.

Traded it in for MOnster Hunter Freedom Unite yesterday and so far not regreting it one bit as MHF: Unite is basically an expansion on Monster Hunter Freedom 2.
So it's a game I'm used to/spent hours on/like but with things ADDED to it rather than TAKEN AWAY...HINT, HINT!!!
Anyway, as I'm feeling less annoyed now I've got that thing off my hands, I'll go for the easier option of saying what I thought was right with it:
*Shinobi Cat
*Enviromental Kills...as an OPTION, not as a script (press button here lol) though.
*rafters inside buildings/hanging stealth kills.
*nice to see speed boots/tabi boots make a return from the 1st game.
...The sound must have been of good quality (man, I'm scraping the barrel lol) because I could play with our pet cat with the recordings (found it out by accident) lol.
...In short I'm used to having the character stood on top of a building, sometimes so high up that the enemy is barely in sight (or out of sight sometimes, but I know they're there because of the numbers) and thinking "can I!?" (can I get the distance and timing right to stealth kill the enemy from that hight) not "press square here"...again lol.
I doubt I will be posting here again, at least until the next Tenchu comes out (of which I will be wary) so the best advice I can give is:
*Take either Tenchu 2, Wrath Of Heaven (being able to stick to the celing with a GRAPPLING HOOK, you don't NEED rafters) or Time Of The Assassins as a gameplay template, make it multi-player co-op (2 or more-player Ad-Hoc deffinatly, Infastructure aswel IF POSSIBLE, but not absolutely neccessary).
*Please get rid of the current Onikage facial design, a child of 10 could draw a star with a line down the middle of it and place it on someones face. (although Onikage is always welcome...even if the frequency of his appearance has been a bit over kill in recent Tenchus IMO).
*Rikimaru is a ninja, not Stone Cold Steve Austin "they will pay" (in the new "I've got throat cancer" voice) *thud* *thud* *thud* lol.

*A demo of the game (either put out in magazines or downloadable to the PSP or consoles it's available for) wouldn't be a bad idea, that way I (and many others from what I gather...the above for one) wont waste £29.99 (or however much they paid for it) and will be able to tell if they like it or not, so, basically, arn't ripped off by a game claiming to be one thing when it's quite another lol.
Nice Extras:
*Wall run, mid air grappling hook and alchemy from Shinobido would be nice.
* Infastructure (online co-op/Deathmatch missions?) IF Create a mission/story is to be included you could up-load your own mission for other people to try to beat and/or the mission could act as a "Lobby" where by you (the creator of the mission) acts as the boss of the mission and it's the other players job to defeat you...if they can navigate your map/get past any traps you may have left for them...remember though "Nice Extra" Ad-Hoc 1st Infastructure 2nd as games usually (if not always) out last servers.
* If it's genuenly funny, B-Side. "Sword, use the cell phone function and call lord Me-Oh" lol.
*Crouching Stealth Kills, as used in Tenchu 2.

I am new to the forum. I frequent the Red Steel 2 blog. While waiting for the release of RS2, I heard about this game and checked it out. This game in my opinion was a sleeper hit. I had t heorigonal Tenchu on my PS1 and it was ok. When i saw this game I though it was going to be th esame thing. Wrong! This gane is way better. Since they aren't going to release Metal gear on the Wii anytime soon, this is a welcome substitute. The graphics are good, sound good, gameplay freakin awesome, and story was entertaining. I do agree that the controls take some getting used to, but overall not bad. I do miss the grappling hook and the sword play isn't much to write home about, (better than RS1 though). This was definitly a good game and I feel bad it was left in the dust.
This game is the most frustrating and disappointing game I have ever bought for Wii. Basically I cannot think of a single positive thing about this game other than good art and music style. Yes I have already beat the game, and played some levels more than once, so I know every aspect of the game already. Trying to get the bonus items by S-ranking all the levels is, let's just say, about as frustrating as trying to paint your house and realizing in the end you used the wrong type of paint. There are SO many things messed up with this game, major ones being:
- Why the hell does the timer not restart if you choose to "restart section, and why does it not pause when you PAUSE the game?? I keep thinking that this is a bug that the developers left out or something, because the reason behind not pausing the timer is beyond me. It basically means if you mess up slightly and get caught by a guard on the last scene of a stage, you have to restart the ENTIRE STAGE to have any chance of getting an S rank on that stage
- Getting map pieces/masks is unbelievably frustrating on this game; main reason is that some pieces require items from other levels to obtain. Example, if you didn't bring a Kasugai or don't have one, you simply can't get some map pieces; but the trick is that the level with the map piece does not have a Kasugai, so what does this mean? You have to replay another level ENTIRELY just to get a Kasugai, just so you can come back to the same level, replay it ENTIRELY again, to get that one map piece. The overarching paths each level has makes it unnecessarily complicated, in that once again you have to replay a level multiple times to get all the items
- This game does not make any sense biologically and physically; how is it that a FULLY ARMORED samurai has more peripheral vision and Azuma Sense than a samurai wearing regular leather armor and no facial protection?? How is it possible to break the neck of a FULLY ARMORED samurai using only your feet (lol)?? How is it possible that enemies don't realize their buddy 5m away just screamed loudly from being burnt to death by a torch?? And so many more that makes this game hilarious yet pathetic at the same time
- It is also worthy to note that "boss" swordfights are much easier than swordfights with regular enemies (lol?), which does not make any sense to me. For example, [SPOILER] the fight with Rinshi [/SPOILER] was so easy that I found the regular samurai from stage 1 to be of more challenge. On the other hand, I have only ever defeated 1 or 2 armored samurais in a duel before; they strike faster and does more damage with a daikatana than a girl wearing a revealing kimono using a Japanese fan, of which the reason is beyond me. Lesson? Never pick a fight with minions
There are lots more reasons why this game is a total disaster and an unpleasant experience, assuming that you're trying to be a completionist that is. Going through the game once was mildly fun for me in that it was challenging, but getting all the bonuses is beyond challenging, it becomes totally frustrating. Even Call of Cthulhu was easier and less frustrating than this seriously.
I wouldn't suggest anyone except those who totally adore stealth-action with TONS of waiting around doing nothing while the enemy passes by, to get this game.
Below is my ratings of this game:
Gameplay experience: 5/10, considering it was mildly fun for the first playthrough, but terrible experience second time around
Sounds/music/effects: 9/10
Controls: 7/10, other people found controls to be terrible, I found it to be merely satisfactory, it wasn't that bad. The only worst part I found is the control used to hide from enemies in an emergency; since there's no way to control which way you dash in an emergency, often times you'll dash towards an enemy, a cliff edge, or a campfire, which brings death even closer
Replayability: I wouldn't really rate this category since the game forces you to replay levels in order to unlock content, so it would have a high replayability. But I didn't find it enjoyable, so it doesn't really deserve a rating
Difficulty/learning curve (higher score means easier difficulty, and more friendly learning curve): 10/10, basically without a guide, good luck with getting any good scores with this game, it's practically impossible without playing each level a dozen times
Bugs?: Yes there are bugs in the game. It's possible to get stuck inside objects, have enemies right beside you but not notice you, the game not recognizing your controller input in button/motion sequences (happens very often during hissatsus), etc.
Well, to put it simply...i will be trading it in, because honestly..imo "Wrath of Heaven" was alot better then this. Can't stress enough how much i hate the new combat system...if i wanted a "Red Steal" combat system i would go buy that damn game...get this mechanic out of Tenchu...and I believe all the "true" fans will agree with me when i say that this tenchu had a total bs storyline...
Now, granted i have not played tenchu 1 or 2, but tenchu has been my fav. game and i mean come on Tenchu 3 was the first game I played for the ps2...it was that one game that made me wanna be a gamer you know what i mean?...and now im having to watch it die a horrible death on the Wii.....enough is enough...hurry up and make a tenchu game that is more open and exciting like AC2 damn it!

i've played every tenchu game and enjoyed them very much.
feedback on the new one:
environments were lovely looking - the rain was really nice. the previous game had even better environments with snow areas and whatnot.. so this one wasn't much of an improvement.
the main problem i had with this one was the lack of freedom. where was the grappling hook? i loved jumping up on the rooftops and running / jumping around whole village areas - dropping down to kill people. the hugely restrictive layout of this game was disappointing and quite frustrating.
the new swordfighting style was quite fun i thought..
the hiding in shadows and ninja special kills were superb.. felt really fluid and the looked awesome ( great job here! )
movement and control was great except - as i mentioned before - the whole feeling was extremely linear and .. static .. because i couldnt get up walls and onto rooftops etc.
second most important problem with this version was the enemy placement. one of the main things about tenchu in the past was that the guards were placed in 'random' locations. this made it more of a challenge as it wasn't just a case of 'learn where the guards are' .. even if you learned where they were in all 3 or 4 'random' configurations.. you couldn't just run along and know what was round the next corner right off the bat. u HAD to be stealthy.
storyline was pretty weak.
this wasn't not my favourite game in the series - but the idea of Tencu is the best!
hope they come out with a new one soon. i love tenchu and it's the best game i own besides grand theft.
i'd be happy to take part in some kind of feedback / testing for the next one to make sure it's done right!

I've played most of Tenchu games,if i could i would play them all.Tenchu is my Favorite game,i love everything on it.Tenchu 4 was great,for me,i really loved it.I dont know why many Tenchu Fans dont like it,it was a Wii game,Acquirie should do something to fit with the console.Anyway here is my opinion for the game:

Thats my opinion,i loved this Tenchu and i've played it 100 hours.I really believe in Tenchu games.
Acquirie if you are reading this now,listen to your fans,Return to the old Gameplay,add Multiplayer and Mission Editor,then Tenchu 5 will be just a Masterpiece!
