Thread: Medal/Promotion Issues in Career mode | Forums

Hi guys. I have been playing Silent Hunter III for about 6 months now, on a 52% skill setting (Realistic reloads, fuels etc) and have just hit April 1st 1944 and have the option of getting a Type XXI. I am about to restart the game as I have nowhere near 30,000 renown that is required for the sub, but as to this date I only have the Iron Cross (1st & 2nd Class) and a full Knight's Cross with everything. (I have sailed 34 missions)

Here are the screen grabs of the medals, career history & tonnage screens. I have a total tonnage sunk in excess of 1.5 million tonnes. Now if the middle badge is the 100K on one patrol award, I have never hit that so no badge, but what about the top 2? My entire crew has the U-Boat War badge & belt buckles so why don't I get either of em, if that is what they are?

I am reasonably sure that the top left is some form of war badge, and finally, what about rank? I am only a Lt. Senior. People here claim to be captains in rank, so how do I get up that high? I mean, let's face it, in the career mode I am the most sucessfull commander by far. Scapa 4 times (4 Cruisers, 1 carrier & 1 battleship). That alone deserves some bigtime promotion!

Anyway, now I ramble, so I'm off to kill another cruiser! Thanks for any help you guys can give me & see's ya later!

Your promotions are based on your current renown value. The amount of renown you earn per sinking and patrol objectives is determined by the reality settings you play at.
As you're running at 52% I'd imagine you might only be getting about half or less the score than if you were playing at 100%.

Let me echo vanjast. I believe if you just go to your patrol area and return to port and sink nothing, at 100% you'll earn 21,000 in 30 patrols, which should be the minimum number of patrols required to get you to 1944. Obviously, you don't have to sink too many ships on top of that to easily have well over 30,000.

Careers with the IX boats do not earn as much renown as VII careers.

It is true that you have more torpedos, but each patrol (assuming you go to your assigned grid) takes more then twice as long while you do not earn twice as much.

Not going to your assigned patrol grid short changes you 700 renown.

All renown earned is cut to 64% right off the top for 52% reality.

If you want a type XXI sometime in your career I would recomend you start with the 7th flotilla in 1939 and stay with the VII's until 44. I would also recomend selecting every reality setting you think you can get used to.

Be aware that there is a bug for patrols into and out of Keil. If you end your patrol too close to base you don't get full credit for your mission. I would recomend you exit the patrol as soon as the game lag lets you know you loaded the base. (about 20 to 30 kms out.)

    I'm on my 29th patrol, May 1943, 12th Flotilla, Type IXC/40, realism 52%.

The BdU always send me to Africa or something, but I found that if you disregard your orders and save time, you compensate for it by finishing patrols faster, and therefore gain renown faster as well.

I've been awarded every medal but two, what I assume is the medal for receiving a wound in battle, as well as what looks like the Uboat clasp. I've maintained a rank of Lt. Commander pretty steadily (got demoted once... Admiral must've caught me with his daughter...)
