Ok, so yesterday i decided that now is about time to do targetting manually, with no WO help. After about 12 or so tries in Torpedo tutorial i finally got it Now that I installed the first-generation sonar, it is a breeze, since i don't have to worry about my boat (and periscope) rocking about, making distance finding hard. So far, I got 39,000 something tons on the current patrol. And i dont think i will go back to auto targetting. For all of you out there who didn't try manual, do so. At first i didnt believe it would be fun, but now i'm hooked You won't regret it either

But if you do try it, be prepared to miss more often than before

You are not wrong at all - I keep missing and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I do okay in practice missions but when it comes to the campaign I fall apart!

combat fever, seen it before, guys think they're firing their weapon but its only in their head they hear it discharging....do you have an endless supply of torpedoes ? if so make sure to hit the fire button in the future.

Actually if you find the true heading and speed of the target you should be hitting it everytime, if you're guessing visually then in the beginning you will miss alot untill your mind is able to recall the sight picture.

What's that supposed to mean? And for those who don't get it right, you really gotta work on getting the AoB as accurately as possible, or you'll definitely miss

You mention getting the Aob accurate, is that in the TDC or the notepad?

If it's the TDC how do you know you have got it right before you shoot?

G_G, I can offer some advice on obtaining the correct AoB. First of all, be stopped. Reverse engines if you have to, but stop moving. Once you have a visual, go to the map screen, where a picture of the enemy ship is magically drawn for you. Zoom in so you have both the target and your boat on the screen, and use the tool that measures angle. The compass? Start straight out in front of the enemy ship in line with it's course, click. Drag to the bow of the ship, click. Drag to the middle of your U-boot and click. This is the AoB. Go to the notepad and drag the AoB indicator around to this angle. Quickly. Don't waste time. It's important. Then the TDC will keep updating as long as you maintain a target lock. Keep checking range. The speed usually is cosistent for a given target type, so if the TDC is indicating 8 knots for a C2, it's probably okay. Keep checking AoB, and correct if necessary. When you get the green light, shoot. I never missed this way.
Incidentally, if you want to target specific areas of the target, i.e. the fuel bunker, it works only on auto-targeting as far as I can determine. Once you are within about 700 m of the ship, these zones become selectable, and darken when you click on them. It's really nice to only require one torpedo per target. I never found manual targetting that much fun. It all depends what you want, historical accuracy, or big tonnage scores. Have fun.
