IIRC none of this has been confirmed yet but I seem to remember that the rumours were along the lines of:
You are actually a descendant of Altair's who is experiencing genetic memory of Altair's actions and becoming aware of a conspiracy which flows through history to the modern day.

I think it's cool how 10 percent is modern day. I don't think you play in modern day you just see clips of it.

by the way, anyone seen the tgs stage demo. at the end a menu system appers on the screen and jade raymond says that she cant talk about that.
the menu options are harddriva, memories, options, shutdown. as the user scrols over the option memories, a tex apears saying: "acsses your genetic memory".
in the background you can see a woman in a lab coat leaning over you.

man thats smart , I saw that demo 2 an at the end when I saw that I didn't know what it was but know it makes sense . I would have never known it had to do with modern day.
