Thread: Realism settings questions...? | Forums

  1. #1
To my most learned colleagues: I am in about to go on my third patrol out of Lorient (and also have been assigned to AN13 for the third time - ugh, but who am I to question BdU) and I have decided to 'up' my realism settings. Can anyone give me more information about the following settings than the help descriptions in the game?

    1. No map contact
    2. No weapons officer assistance
    3. No external view

The sim gives a brief description, but no details. This and any other info on realism settings would be appreciated. And, by the way, is there a way to change going to AN13 a third time?

Thanks to all and... GOOD HUNTING!!!

    I'll go in reverse order.

No external view is exactly that. Hitting the F12 key will not give you the free roaming camera. You'll be able to go to the bridge when surfaced, look through the binocs/UZO/periscopes and man the guns, but you will not be able to take the camera out and look around.

Weapons officer. There are a couple of orders you can give the weapons officer, to perform the steps of manual torpedo targeting. He can identify the target for you, as well as make the calculations for range/speed/AOB instantly. When you turn this option off, those orders are greyed out and you cannot give them.

Auto-Map Update. When this option is on, anything visible to you will be shown on the map, in the correct position, with its current position and heading constantly updated in realtime. Also, you'll get bearing lines on the map when underwater showing hydrophone contacts (black for merchants and red for warships). All of this goes away when you turn the map updates off. You'll have to mark ship positions manually, using the map tools.

The only item I'm still unclear on is the weapons officer. Right now, I only use the weapons officer to check my ordinance. I do not currently target manually. Does this mean that with the weapons officer assistance option 'off', when I look through the periscope or UZO, the note pad will not automatically display the target, bearing, range, and speed?

I personally play with all settings to realistic except auto map update and external view. I like to see the map contacts appear on the map as I believe this would normally be done for you anyway in real life. Also I like to see external views but I dont cheat by zooming in to targets to identify them etc.

By setting the weapon officer off all you are losing is his ability to identify the target for you and set a solution up. These are not realistic as he wouldnt be able to do that normally from inside the control room. If you set manual targetting then you have to identify the target using the book, input its speed, range, and bearing etc before you fire which is all fun stuff.

The Realism Settings in the game govern its arcade aspects. To play "Full Real" you should use:

    1. Torpedo allocation from Uboat Commanders Handbook.
    2. Use of Hydrophoens per Uboat Commanders Handbook.

This will give you realistic results patrol after patrol, career after career, subsim after subsim.

This is proved beyond a doubt by the number of people who play of 100% realistic settings but get arcade like results.
