When Command asks you to photo recon Rabaul, what they are really saying is: "We've got too many sailors, officers and subs. Let's throw some away."

Those patrolled shallows are certain death. Did any of the pencil pushers command a sub? Wouldn't they know that's a death sentence?

I raid Rabaul all the time and get some good tonnage there.
I wonder if there's any difference in the harbor lineup (docked ships, patrol boats, etc.) when you're on an assigned recon mission.

I usually have no trouble with getting into/out of Rabaul. There isn't that many escorts (nor are they the smartest), and as long as you aren't shooting at docked ships from 1000yds I'd say you won't have any trouble.

I have never made it inside the harbor, but it you time it right and hug the southern coast, you can reach a point where you can see ships in the harbor. I made my approach from the east, not the north. Then I snuck out the way I came.

I've been there several times. Had no luck at all running in during the daytime, but a slow approach at night from the east over the narrowest part of the shallows gets me into positon to pick off the escorts and then wreak major havoc in the port!

I was in there once, and as I was lining up on a ship...A US air attack came in and sunk everything worth a torpedo
