There are a few possibilities to check.

    1) Is the building connected to a road?
    2) Does the building have access to a storehouse?
    3) Does the storehouse have the raw materials your building needs?

I highly recommend you play the single player campaign to start, the first half of the missions are basically a long tutorial to help you get the hang of things.

Awesome -thanks for the quick guide. What would really help is if we had a walk through guide for military, trade, and technology for the first map.

The guide has some incorrect information.

it says "be careful traders can only follow one path."

    not true
you can back track to other routes. you just have to make them cover old ground manually by clicking each trade area until your flag gets where you want it.
it costs you a gold every space you back track.

if your quick in the early game you can cap all 4 starting connection points and bar every other player from ever being able to trade.

You can use the delete key and the end key also.

I think you can still bunny-hop over people who have already gained staging posts in order to get to further posts for yourself. At least that's what I think I did last night when a computer AI blocked all exits from the starting trade position.

Edit: Sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you meant blocking points on the actual trade-map. But yes you can block all the ports on the main terrain to stop others using the ports.

So you have unlocked "Stronghold, Export Office, and Church" in the first column of the prestige tree, if you have a stronghold. You now have access to the three icons behind it in the second column. The bottom icon of the three is "Stronghold Upgrade".

To upgrade, click on your Stronghold and select the upgrade option in the bottom left of the window that opens.

Can geologists find new deposits of stone? I need some for the final Stronghold upgrade.

Geologists do not find new stone deposits. They only find stones in iron, coal, or gold mines.

If you set an iron mine, a coal mine or a gold mine to geologist, he might find stone. Sometimes he finds nothing, sometimes he finds more ore, sometimes he find stones. If the mine is full, he is much more likely to find stone, maybe he will find a stone every time.
