Thread: Ghost Recon/R6 Lineage of Tactical Realism? | Forums

  1. #1
I was just wondering what everyone thought about the tradition of these games going back to the originals like R6 and R6 Rogue Spear and GR ( I don't know about GR2 as I don't play console games any longer ), but here's my question...

Over the years I have played various shooting games with low levels of realism (some of which are understandable) and had not been terribly impressed; many were fun in their own right such as the early days of Counterstrike and my personal favorite Unreal Tournament.

However, it was my first experience with R6: Rogue Spear that really won me over, I like many people enjoyed the seeming tactical realism of this game, where you could withstand no more than one or two hits and actually had to work to stay alive, take cover, sneak around etc rather than these other games such as bunny hopping and dying/respawning every minute.

Well I'm sure everyone's very familiar with all these old games, but bringing ourselves forward to the present and near future I've found that Ravenshield is getting a little long in the tooth and yes I know they've had an expansion pack for it (my favorite is ofcourse coop missions on veteran) but as of late I've been unbelievably disappointed in the direction of recent games, namely Battlefield 2.

I made the mistake of trying to use R6 style tactics in this game and found such results as,

you shoot someone 3-4 times in the chest and head... they turn around start bunny hopping towards you then lay prone 3 feet in front of you while you're still shooting them and then proceed to kill you by stabbing your foot with their knife ( hellllo cheater strike )

you are actually penalized under the current point system when your teammates fly their planes into or run over you with their tanks, or even if they outright blow you up or shoot you... ( Oh gee, I'm sorry it was my fault for being in your way... thanks I deserve -8)

Sniper Rifles that in their description are good to as much as 1000m ( ie SVD Dragonuv )
but have one level of zoom and a person looks the size of an ant from 110m.. and that isn't the best part...

I camped a tower near an enemy airbase from approx 90m and shot someone 2 times in the head as they ran for their jetfighter... and they were able to hop in and fly away...

( this one doesn't even deserve comment )

Well long story short... We've all been more than patient waiting for a Ghost Recon 2 that will never come (has been canceled for Ghost Recon 3) which by some store accounts is slated for mid-sept (I'm thinking more like nearly X-mas)

worse still R6 Lockdown which was going to be March, no wait June, well definately September, er... well sorry guys try back Q1 06'

That's not even what concerns me anymore, after seeing the first teaser videos of Lockdown I saw such appauling things as an operative who ran out in the the middle of a town square gun blazing vs 3 or so terrorists... and he killed one (ok) but then actually 10 feet from the other two terrorists stopped to drop clip, pull bolt, grab another clip, insert, reload and the whole time the terrorists stood there patiently and politely waiting to be PwNed... (how nice of them)

But how I do worry, now I may just be too old now (post college and risking arthritis now, heh my new razer diamondback is in the mail to replace my weathered Mx 510.. but for the love of god (like I told my local Ebgames staff) either they start making some tactical shooting games in the fine tradition of R6/GR of old...
( Instead of 9-12 year old blow em ups that are great for Army Recruiting (hey sarg? when do I respawn?)) or this Old boy is going to have to quit shooting games altogether in favor of grandpaw's strategy games...

    thanks! comments please.

BF2 blows so much it apparently swept away your common sense not to take such sh!tty games seriously. Pretend you never saw it.

Without a doubt BF2 bites, how come some reviews are giving it a 9/10? Is this some sort of EA marketing scheme?

I have to agree that its been a while since I've seen a comparable tactical FPS...

BF2 sells because it has everything most people want. Tanks, jeeps, planes, full auto weapons and bunny hopping. Therefore, the gaming publications need reviewers that represent this mainstream sudience, and like the same stuff.

I honestly don't think BF2 will live long. People will grow tired of it after a few months, and it won't have anywhere near the staying power of GR.

I think that says alot about the type of people who do these reviews and how much you should pay attention to them.

Once I got RS I played only that until Eagle Watch, then Rogue spear, Urban Ops, etc through to GR, which I still play thanks to lots of great mods. No other type of game interested me. I just hope GRAW holds my interest like the others.

I love tactical. I like sneaking up on the guy and placing a claymore behind him. I did that w/several snipers in our pub server back in the day. No respawns, so you treat your movements w/much more anxiety. GR pwns the tactical gaming genre.

    Actualy, I like Battlefield 2 (don't throw tomatoes !)
But it's not for his realism.

So Why is it get's so big rewards ? The Snipers can't definitivly hit a tank at 200m. Headshots doesnt kill you instantly even with a barret ! F15 are designed to be the cas striker and f18 as the air supperiority striker (This one is a complete non sense !!! Since when the f15 isn't design to rule the sky and the f18 can't drop more than two bombs) There are no multiple types of missile, you need to continue to aim with some fire and forget weapon like the SRAW etc. etc. etc.

But so why I still love it. Why do I still have fun with a game where at long distance It's the ak47 who rules a m95. I think that I got an answer, It's because it's fun, because with this game if you got a good team, you can realy enjoy it. You feel usefull. If you know how to handle it, the bunny jumper knifer of doom, won't even make 2m under a dozen of bullet from multiple saw (wich is by the way too less acurate for a 1km weapon ). Yes this game as default (the sniper is useless ... but how many games became a sniper war games because they kill everyone and spoil the fun ?) But it's fun, it entertain me, and is that not what is the most important in a game ? Fun ? When you buy a battlefield where you can handle helicopter and jets (wich are bye the way normaly at dozens and dozens feet higher that what you see in the game), you don't expect realism but fun.

And I espect that Ghost Recon will be far more realist than Battlefield. But it doesn't mean, that I just want to have the next US Army MOUT simulator, I expect a game wich is original realist, with lots of original and fun feature, wich entertain me and by the Way with a good IA :P, I know that's difficult, but If you could give us a good IA that's would be perfect . But most of all ... FUN !

That's all I have to say about Battlefield, Have a nice day
