Thread: computer wont restart in safe mode | Forums

  1. #1
hey guys, i have another computer related question/problem. i wanted to run my computer in safe mode to try to run adaware and spybot, but when i hit F8 to restart in safe mode, it goes to load the long list of drivers, seems to load the last one, then the screen goes black. it restarts my computer, starts to load normally, then displays a message like : "windows
was not shut down properly and is given options to restart in safe mode, restart normally or use the last safe configuration." luckily, i can load it normally, but im worried because i cant load it in safe mode. im running adaware and spybot in normal mode as we speak. thank you in advance.

my computer seems to be causing me more bad than good, as of late. guess i needs to take better care of it

I was in this position once...
BACK ALL YOUR VALUABLE FILES UP NOW!!!

Okay so the worst might not happen but it did to me!

You could try a boot where you have to allow each line to run, and nix the one that causes problems, but...
I am only guessing here, but if it boots okay using the correct drivers (normal mode) but not in safe mode, it sounds like the native windows drivers have been corrupted, or your HW has developed a dislike to them!
Have you run a repair program like scandisk or Norton System Works etc?
If they dont help you could try the Mircosoft file checker which I am sure Marts can remember the run command for? This will compare files with the initial installation and allow you to repair them.
If it goes wrong you are back needing to reformat. Not sure its worth the risk at the momment as it is still working okay!
I would leave it but make regular back ups of essential data...

    Hope this helps...

EDIT: Just had a word with your PC, it said if you spent less time partying till 3-4 in the morning it might work better

i dont know how to explain it very well. but i forced it to restart in the "msconfig" safe mode. then, the same thing happened, and it restarted, but since its suck in the "safe mode configuration" that i made it do in msconfig, it keeps restarting and restarting. i cant get on my computer to turn off the safe mode because, it keeps restarting, lol. i hope you see my problem here. is the only thing left to do to reformat?

i tried reformatting my computer, and it froze at 94% through the reformatting process (i tired it twice, and twice it froze). so now im S.O.L. because the new 80 gig Maxtor HD that i bought from new egg is messed up. i talked to a computer guy and he said that if it freezes during the reformat process that means that there are bad sectors on it, which means im basically ****ed. this is causing me way too much stress.

so, i think im just gonna get a new 120 gig 7200 RPM WD harddrive for $50 (100 - 50) exactly like my F drive. i dont really want to wait

Once you get the 120 gig formated (and if you have not RMAed the 80 gig maxtor), mount the Maxtor as a slave and run a low level format which should isolate bad sectors as it goes. Unless it is a physically damaged sector, it should still be usable. If it is under warranty I would return it anyway.

I have three SATA WD 120 gig drives and they all work flawlessly. $50 is a great price BTW.
