I'm hoping that if not the standard that there will be a hard setting that tweaks everything: realistic damage to units and long firing ranges.

If you look at most RTS games, they have problems with this.

    Examples:
C&C Generals, it took forever for a tank to kill a ground troop. Nothing will destroy realism more than to see a regular grunt take 5 hits by a 2020 tank to get killed. If cover is taken into consideration and the AI is as good as they say it is, then let that infantryman get killed in 1 or at the most 2 shots. The exception would be the level of his cover and/or if for example you're talking about the exoskeleton. Perhaps that might take 1 more shot to get killed.

Act of War: Direct Action was good at damage settings.

    Firing distances:
If we have the 3rd person, horizon view, let's see that realistic firing distances are in place. If I have a unit that has line of sight to an enemy tank and my unit is a grunt equipped with an anti-tank missile like the Javelin, please don't have him shoot at what amounts to 50M! Even for a rifle that's relatively close range and the ATGM's of the era can/should do better than Javelin's 3km or so kill range.

Likewise with tanks, I can't stand to see tanks in RTS games essentially shooting at each other to what amounts to 10 meters. Tanks can kill each other at 4km. And with modern munitions like STAFF or the Mid Range Munition, tanks can fire at even longer distances.

I understand some might have an issue with this, but that's why I suggested they put these settings in a separate category (hard setting)so the game essentially plays and fights realistically in addition to tweaking the usual parameters of AI difficulty.

I think that with the smaller scale of the battles in EndWar, it would be able to pull off things like what you're mentioning. Plus, EA won't be creating it...

I think its really possible for all this stuff to be in EndWar. Expessially the distance issue because we will be fighting in entire cities which are huge so I think its very possibly they might have some of things.
The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on.

Well, they've already said that there won't be as many units on screen and on the field as seen in previous RTS's, and it'll be on the 360. I agree with you completely that this would be possible.

It's hard to tell what effective engagement range will be. Obviously in an urban environment it can be pretty damn close and still be realistic.

The only in-game image showing unit disposition was in a city, and the units looked very close together. The scale of the commander's interface may have been off, however, or it could simply be close quarters due to substantial urban development. It is entirely possible that there are also less developed maps where engagement ranges would be considerably longer.
