Thread: New 9800XT Crashes | Forums

  1. #11
Hi Hunter! Well, so far nothing seems to make a difference. I did install the other MoBo drivers you mentioned, but no change.

With FB running, the computer crashes to a black screen (no signal detected) after about an hour and the only thing I can do is hold the power button in to reboot.

Is there any possibility that the Catalyst 3.10 drivers could cause this? I rechecked system temp immediately after it shut down and it was only 38 C. I may try the 3.7's to see if there ia a difference. This is clearly due to my change from the NVidea 5900U to the 9800XT...that is the only thing that was changed.

    Cheers,

If you're playing for about an hour and it locks it could be a few things.
    A) Heat on card only (case temps)
    B) Infinite loop issue/old nvidia driver remnants
    C) PSU
    D) AGP Voltage too low from PSU

does your mobo have any type of voltage monitoring software? If so run it under load and post avg when done

Hi Hunter! Thanks for staying with me on this. I've narrowed this down a bit more, as follows:
    1. I don't think it is a heat issue as system temp don't exceed 33C and CPU temps never exceed 41C, but I could be wrong about this. I've got three fans going and the sides of the case are literally cool to the touch even after a lot of gaming.
    2. Old NVidea drivers...now that is a possibility and I'll chase that down next. I'll run Detonator_RIP to see if that helps.
    3. Other than knowing my PSU is 400W, I have no way to check voltages under load...MoBo doesn't seem to support that. I'll do the best I can within the BIOS...see info below.
    4. AGP voltage too low...hmmm, don't know how to check that either...my apologies for my ignorance.

I did try one thing that has made a small positive difference. I disabled VPU Recover and now, instead of crashing to a black screen when in the game, after approximately an hour, things just freeze up (joystick, mouse, keyboard, etc all are ineffective). This appears to happen only when FB is running (sitting on Start Screen), but I am not at the computer, i.e. I've left it for awhile and haven't shut FB down. By the way, I've confirmed this only happens when FB is open...I left the computer running for a couple of hours (desktop showing) and it did not freeze up or otherwise crash.

I played FB for about an hour, then quit and quickly checked the following in the Health section of the BIOS:
    CPU Core Voltage 1.42V
    Vcc 1.8V 1.77V
    Vcc 3.3V 3.23V
    Vcc 5.0V 5.02V
    +12V 11.71V
    StandBy 3.3V 3.45V
    StandBy 5.0V 4.99V
    Voltage Battery 3.07V
    CPU Temp 38C
    System Temp 30C
CPU Fan 1 Speed 2410 RPM
CHS Fan 1 Speed 1700 RPM
BAK Fan 1 Speed 3600 RPM

I'm afraid that is all I can provide, Hunter. I'm not a great deal of help, I'm afraid. Let me know if you have any thoughts.

    Cheers,

I made the same change as you. I was very careful to get all the nvidia stuff off my system. I'd make sure you have it all clean.

I also just switched from a 5600 Ultra to a 9800 Pro. I was getting the black screen lock ups after a while of playing - not just FB but other games too. I switched out my old PSU for a new Enermax 450W PSU, it seems to have worked but I couldn't be 100% sure yet as I havn't used my PC that much over the last couple of days.

I'll let you know how I get on - but it won't be until the new year as I'm away from home at the moment.

The reason I suspected the PSU to be the problem was that after locking up and crashing - the PC was dead for 20 or 30 seconds. I couldn't turn it on again and no power LEDs were lit on the motherboard. Is this happening to you?
