Hi again,
I'm using IL-2 [Standard] on a laptop. I try to change controls for firing from Backspace or Return buttons, to, say space bar. But when I play it stays on default. Any advice?

Just how did you go about changing the controls?
The procedure to change is to go into the menu, then select "controls".
Scroll down to the command that you wish to either change or map initially (many aren't even set up initially).
Select the box on the right side that shows what the current button is with your mouse. The press the new button on your keyboard, joystick or even mouse. Note: Each command can have up to 2 buttons selected.
At this point I don't know what you click to save the changes as I'm not at my home PC. I think that maybe you hit "back", then "apply"?
If you start the game and use a different pilot name or create a new pilot, then you will have to change the settings again.

Control assignments are pilot specific, you'll have to make assignments for each pilot (or copy the "settings.ini" file from pilot folder to pilot folder, pilot folders are found in the Users folder).
Make sure the "settings.ini" file for the pilot your make changes for is not set to read only. Right click on the file and select properties, the file attributes will be near the bottom of the properties dialog box.
The IL2 series does check if you try to over-ride key assignements, so ...
Did that change to space-bar actually take?
IIRC, space-bar is one of the standard fire options (including, but not necessarily one of, rockets and bombs)
