One problem regarding having too many friends though is when you log into http://yourshapecenter.us.ubi.com/dashboard to compare your stats against your friends...most everyone gets cut off the screen and there's no way to check your progress against theirs. Also..loading a lot of friends on the leaderboard takes absolutely forever.
