it's a well-known fact that he did it because he loved her. just watch the ending one more time.

-he screams out loud when Elika is about to die
-he carries her to her mother's grave on his hands
-he weeps above her corpse
-he clunches his fists and gets ****ed
-he revives her
-when she asks "why?", he gives that kind of look that says just about everything.

Yeah, I think the logical answer is that the guy is in love with her, im not how will she react in the next game (if there is ever another game) but I think she will correspond after being a bit annoying with the prince.
In my opinion,I think this ending is nice, but its a selfish ending because the guy just did something to please himself(and in some other way, to please Elika too), it was Elika's will to sacrifice herself, so, the real heroic (tragical) ending would be if the guy just left her dead over the tomb and left that place forever, honoring her memory as a true heroine... Thats a real ending (also a sad one) but a cool one indeed.
