Thread: Maestro on BBC 4... | Forums

I've been watching this series now for a number of weeks and am still not convinced that a conductor is needed at all...

I never see anyone looking at the student conductor's any whoo, so are we talking a fifth wheel here...

The work of a real conductor is much more than that. He in fact chooses the tempo, the articulation, the dynamics, the balance, the mood and the expression of a piece, and gives very precise instructions about all these things in the rehearsals.

Most of that work isn't related to the baton waving you see in the actual performance, that mostly serves as a reminder of what's been worked before.

The series just shows how very well trained -though unimaginative- members of a long tradition orchestra (mainly the first violin) can take on themselves the conduction role, while some random guy makes a farcical baton shaking somewhere up there.

    Hi all,

My brother is a professional 'classical' musician. He plays with one of the main London Orchestras.

His view is that Conductors are vastly overpaid. The fees for the few famous Conductors are far greater than the whole orchestra

Any Viola player jokes out there? And no,he doesn't play a viola. But viola players for some reason are savagely picked on by other musicians.

For instance...how do you make two viola musicians play in tune? Answer..Shoot one of them...

    Any screenshots?

    Best Regards,
    MB_Avro.
Where is Europe? Can it be seen from England? I hope not.

LOL. What a coincidence, I was saying exactly the same to my kid.

These musicians look like they`re doing fine without this guy.

    p.s.
I see what Dux says and he`s probably right, but it still seems a little bit like a convenient excuse to shut up the masses. The cost of a conducter mentioned by Avro also seems somewhat unbalanced, if true.

"Well, we must have a conducter because one just must! You plebs wouldn`t understand!"

Yeah, those football managers too. What use are they? All they do is stand on the side of a pitch shouting. I don't even see the players looking at them.

Do you really not hear a difference in the music between these two?

Avro, I've heard that joke told about flautists too, as well as...What is the definition of a minor second? Two flautists playing in unison.
Or...What is the difference between a flautist and a seamstress? A seamstress tucks her frills. Ba-boom...ching.

Some conductors may be overpaid but they are very necessary and can make or break a great performance. It requires an incredible range of hard and soft skills.

Still not convinced, GIAP.Shura wrong sort of comparison, show me one conducting the same piece with say a 2 hour interval...

If stamina is what is bothering you just go and see the 9 hour Ring cycle.

Really, the answer is in the music, you just have to listen. The two interpretations above are the most interesting because they are both in time and "correct" but one is just so much more enjoyable than the other and the only change is the conductor.

These pieces of music are incredibly robust but they don't play themselves:

    15 hour ring cycle .
Seriously, if you want to see a good conductor at work with an excellent orchestra:
    Herbert von Karajan

To be honest I think that your question would answer itself if you consumed more classical music.
