Thread: Please release the Uru SDK! | Forums

  1. #1
I'm sure a lot of people would love to create their own Ages. Cyan, I think you should release the SDK programs you used for Uru to the community. Many developers have done this, and the fan-created content expanded the games' replay values phenomenally.

There are two main reasons why you may not want to:

    1. It's not user friendly: Well, neither are most SDKs. If that's the case, then only the hardcore programmers in the community will create new Ages, and judging by the amount of quality mods made for a lot of games, there are a great number of them. You don't have to provide any support for it at all. Just type up a short Readme file explaining the basic features and we'll figure out the rest.

    2. You want to maintain realism: I understand there's a big roleplaying aspect involved in designing Uru. I'm not sure if D'ni is real. But the same way Call of Duty is a game version of World War II, Uru is a game version of D'ni. You can use creative license. So what if people create Ages that aren't real? I'm pretty sure that Rise of Nations isn't depicting the Mayans taking over the world as a real thing, either.

So, please, release the Age creator programs. Or at least give us a way to create our own Relto pages and Avatar clothes?

I'm the least likely person to enjoy Myst games, but I do. Now where's my walkthrough?

or that they're still using it and actively using content?

most developers that release their SDK are games to which content is either being added to by the player comunity or they don't have plans to release anything other than upgrade discs.. not monthly/weekly online content..

    Just a thought

Wouldn't releasing the SDK spell a security risk for Uru:Live? Part of the autentication process for live verifies the nature of certain files in the directory - if those files have been altered, wouldn't that mean that Live won't work?

Not slamming the idea - just curious. It sounds like Ubisoft is going to be using their own SDK for the next few years to develop content for live; it sounds to me like releasing it would be a punch in the wallet for them. Kinda like releasing the source code to Half Life 2 before releasing the ga.... Oh. Ouch. Sorry Gabe.

I've got the activation code for HL2 via Steam sitting here mocking me. Damn you ATI! Damn you VALVE! Damn you trojan writers and software theives!!

*sigh* I just watched the 25 minute HL2 demo - between these two games I can throw my Connect Four set away, I've got a new pass-time.

call me crazy, but for me, personally, it would kind of ruin some of the magic (and i'm a programmer!) does that make any sense? i don't know, it just wouldn't be the same with a whole bunch of user-created ages, some of which might be interesting, but most of which will be awful, and none of which will live up to cyan's ages.

that being said, i have to admit i've never been the type of person who liked fan fiction, and for me this would fall into that category. perhaps that's part of the reason i'm against the idea.

as for an avatar creation sdk, BY ALL MEANS YES! avatars are a completely different story, because they are meant to be YOU, and not really a part of d'ni lore. and also because i have some totally rad designs in mind for my hoodie.

Maybe they don't want thousands of ages devoted to players cats.

or you think the barricade situation is bad now, imagine thousands of dead-end ages with construction equipment blocking the way.

Seriously it would be neat and a wonderful think to dream about and conceive but I think a lot of things need to be done ahead of time. If they did have such a thing I would hope they went through the stringent approval process for the sake of the players.
