Well, I was out the entire day today, and when I got home, I found that someone had broken into my home. They smashed the back sliding glass door and had proceeded to go directly upstairs to the bedroom. Several pieces of valuables were stolen including all of my watches except the one I was wearing, but none of the electronics were touched, it seemed the burglar was probably young and was too afraid to stay inside the house for too long so not much were stolen but a lot were ransacked.

Luckily a gold bracelet that used to belong to my late grandfather was spared, other more valuable items were lost, but this one has sentimental value that couldn't be replaced.

Part of me was glad nobody was home at the time of the break in, but part of me kind of hoped that I would have been home with my firearm when it did...

I don't know, maybe it's just the anger speaking...

But I guess this settles the argument of whether you are at risk if you don't live in a bad neighborhood. Everyone in my neighborhood live in houses worth $300k or more, and yet it still happens here...

Now I wish I would have found the problem with my security system instead of simply turning it off until I "found time."

Sorry to hear bout the break in Demon.
Fortunately the material losses were slight and noone was hurt, however I fully understand your feelings..
Here in Spain all houses have bars on their windows and doors (which struck me as strange the first time I came here as most homes in the UK do not have them) as burgalry is national pastime.
I have not gotten round to putting in alarm system in my apartment yet but am planning to do so soon..

Sorry to hear that Demon, but its probably better that nobody was home at the time. My cousin woke up in the middle of the night once a long time ago and he and his wife were confronted with two guys which tied my cousin and his wife and robbed the house. Thank god they didnt harm their newborn baby. I had just come to the US at the time too.

Well, the homeowner's insurance is a freakin joke. It's like $1500-$2000 every year, and now, they are saying they will pay no more than $1000 for the losses, and "coincidentally" their deductable is $1000, so that means, they are going to pay, $0, hm, how convenient!

So basically, in the past 5 years alone, they have earned $10,000 from me and so far they have paid $0, wow, what would I have done without them? Answer: Probably be $10,000 richer...

I'm thinking about canceling the insurance, and every year putting away that same amount into a separate bank account that I will not touch unless there's an emergency. So it'll be my own insurance, except there is no deductable and I won't skimp on myself claiming that just because I don't have a receipt for something that was bought like 10 years ago means I cannot get it replaced at all...
