Here is a screenshot of what I am experiencing

(hope this isnt violating the NDA)

I have tried updating drivers, directx, rebooting, reloading, quitting all other programs, changing resolutions, and nothing helped.

I already submitted a bug report, but I hoped you guys might have experienced this.

Im running an AMDxp2200, 1GB ram, a gf 5600 on the dvi line to my 27" viewsonic LCD. any ideas?

    Whoa... looks bad.

Have you tried adjusting the settings?

I see you can read the texts. So try to get into the visuals menu and play around. Tell us if this changes anything.

However, the tree is clearly wireframe - this doesn't look good at all!
Maybe your download was corrupted or your HD has bad sectors. Or it might also be your memory, if this appears only from time to time.

Couldn't it be the options in user.cfg that needs tweaking, like
    setvar adapter_to_use = 1
    for example?

If nobody answers you here mrecentric, go ask that same question on forumplanet. There is a section for these problems. And there is already a graphic problem:
Game won't start: failed to set display mode
