Thread: Minimum Torp' Range? | Forums

  1. #1
Just a quick question, but is there a set minimum range for a torpedo to arm itself modelled in this. Ya see, whenever im hitting boats at very close range theyre ALL bouncing off. Suspicious....

Im a bit n00bish, so if anyone just knows the distances thatll be trés helpful.

Yes, there is, about 300 metres.

Keep it in mind, especially when you're in thick fog.

ach, I've fired fish that have killed targets (destroyers) at perhaps 240m

speed is also a factor in determining how far a torp has to go before it is armed, since it is time, not distance traveled that arms a torp.

I've sank a destroyer at 270 meters (T-1, fast speed). But wouldn't rely too much in those short ranges.

Shoot only if you're about 300 meters. Closer distance are just hopeless shots... and you've just a bunch of torpedoes.

Actually, I think it's distance, not time. As I understand it, there was basically a fan mounted on the front of the torpedo. Just as blowing air on a fan blade will make it turn, the water as the torpedo moved would make the front mounted fan turn. The rotation count would determine distance traveled, and only after a certain number of rotations would the detonator pistols arm.

Range to target is situationally dependant. If you and the target are moving toward each other, the range will shrink before impact. If the target is moving away from you, then the torpedo will travel farther before impact than the range was at the moment of firing. That's the basis of my hunting technique in heavy fog; I fire a stern shot as the target moves away. I can shoot at about 270 meters and the target will move at least another 30 meters before the torpedo closes.

I try to fire any fish at a minimum range of 350 meters.
Any closer and the bounce is my experience.

Also been(/maybe still) used on bombs. When the bomb is dropped a little propeller will spin and unscrew the safety so that it will losen from the bomb.
