Thread: As a long time Rainbow vet, played the game for the first time last night. | Forums

Since I am huge Rainbow fan, I eagerly anticipated the release of this game. Because I like this series alot I even defended this game numerous times on the forum to those that disagreed witht the approach of Lockdown. However, after playing the game, my opinions have changed somewhat. This game is not Rainbow. There are tactics involved, and I guess there are skills involved to being good at the game, but the same could be said of Halo. Obviously there are tactics in even Halo and players that are better than others, but like Halo, this game does turn into a frag fest very quickly.

I don't really have a problem with the armor and increased shots to hit a person, IF they kept the shooting system from previous games. But since they went to the more realistic, but much tougher iron sights, Lockdown has forced players to play run and gun, because head shots are extremely difficult. Switching from the regular sights in R63 to the iron sights was not a bad decision, just not a necassary one.

The graphics are obviously improved despite what some naysayers have said. The frag grenades are extremely weak though in appearance. Exploding confetti is spot on in description. The maps also, while not poor, do not have any character. What I mean is that there are no really awesome maps like a airport, garage, or presidio which you could tell were just awesome maps from the first time playing them.

PEC mode is a keeper. Definitely the highlight of this game. Hopefully, they keep this in future titles.

This game is not a great game and maybe not even good. It is better than average and entertaining which is reflected in its reviews by OXM, Ign, etc. I can't explain it, but this game just does not feel like Rainbow. I appreciate Goliath and Mahub or whoever spent their time and energy to put out a finished product. I just hope for the future of Rainbow that the devs view Lockdown as an experiment and take whats good (PEC, graphics) and integrate that into the old rainbow which involved more realism, and yes, skill. Sorry if this thread is reptitive, but I needed to vent my thoughts which are slightly less partisan than other Rainbow purists.

Excellent post Domer. I was going to post my feelings the exact same way as you just did.

I can now see why people say there are no tactics to this game. I've tested this theory and it seems pretty true. The last few nights, I've tried my hardest to play as tactful as possible. Peeking the corners, closing the doors, I've found all that to be pretty much wasted with Lockdown.

I approached a corner, peeking to take aim at the opponent coming around the corner. I knew he would come down this certain hallway, I had that gut instinct. Sure enough, I was right. Peeked out and shooting, I got killed. Not because the other opponent peeked me, because he bolted around the corner holding down his R-trigger. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. Very annoying.

Another is being spawn killed. Red Light is notorious for people taking the back doors to contain you as soon as you spawn. I tried numerous times to shut the door, but I get killed INSTANTLY because I have to get right in front of the door in order to close it. It makes me vulnerable and ticked. I try my hardest to eliminate a big threat/situation, and something that was so easy to do in past titles of Rainbow just isn’t effective as it was once before.

Accuracy is another issue I have. I now know why people call this a run & gun or a spray & pray game. Accuracy is too high. You can hold the trigger down as long as you want, aim for the head and know that you've got your opponent killed. It's all about who can get to the shot quicker with the most amount of ammunition. This is NOT how the series has ever played out in the past.

With the mixture of these issues and other frustrations, I'm sad to admit that I may just be putting this game up for good. PEC mode is a great idea, needs a lot more work. I really, really regret saying this, but I think Stocko said it best a few weeks back, “just give us old Rainbow with PEC mode and we'll call it even.â€Â

I agree with both of you... and it's true about the accuracy thing, at least in single-player, just point at the enemy's head with even an SMG, from any distance, spray a little, and he's down.

Ditto these posts! I agree with the perceived realism having left the game from a playability perspective. The problem appears to be a complete lack of precision in killing opponents. The resulting play is much like Halo--a massively overrated bit of software IMO.

But perhaps, the first two Rainbow installments didn't exactly represent realistic killing--although they were/are loads of fun. Honestly, how many people could (in real life) regularly headshot a moving foe, while on the run, from 50-100 meters with a single shot while looking through an optical scope? While the gameplay was great in this aspect, how many Rainbow players have emptied multiple clips at point blank range into an opponent while you both danced the round away with an outcome of one dead player and one who lost no health? I won't even mention the leaning-related nonsense.

One final point on the Rainbow franchise. In spite of the glitches and flaws in the first Rainbows, you could always get a competitive game online. The first two titles offered infinite gameplay. I mean, really, how long have those games been out? What's the typical lifespan of a video game title, anyway? Frankly, I don't see the same level of commitment with the current title. Once everyone's built their character up to level 40 (particularly with 360 coming out) is the gameplay good enough to keep people coming back after they've gotten to see the PEC goodies at the end of the Rainbow?

Unfortunately, I believe lockdown is nothing more than a development exercise for future 360 installments. Frankly, this thing will probably run better on the 360 hardware.

    Just my thoughts.

I too have been a long time player of the Rainbow titles. With this game's gameplay and bugs, it became too frustrating to play. I've taken the game back and received a full refund. Thank goodness for EB. I hope ubi will get back to basics and make a better Rainbow for the 360. Until then it's back to BA.

I want to return it too. I'm just gonna wait until I see what Ubi has to say about this embarrassment before I decide. Do right by me and I'll be content. Shaft me again (I trusted in the series and foolishly purchased it sight unseen) and I'll never purchase another Ubi game again AND make sure my personal website steers potential customers away as well.

Do we not remember my spawn killing claim from the demo? basically was told You ave three seconds if you cant protect yourself in that amount of time then you suck. Or as one fo the devs basically put it, you have time to protect yourself. Let's look at clinic as an example..two ways out fo the spawn. 6 members of the other team hang outside the spawn and kill bang bang right when you walk out the door or throw grenades at the doors. So you're stuck. Then you get those arseholes who stand in the corners in your spawn and just shoot at you once invincibility wears off. Dont egt me wrong I like the maps, but why put spawns so close to each other? By putting spawns that clsoe you have made ti run N gun no matter what you say. Clinic has so much wasted space cause no one uses it cause they are too busy spawn killing. Why do special ops get Sniper rifles? there are hardly any places to snipe from on these maps they are all mostly CQB maps. I think this game would have been alot better with bigger maps example: Trainyard. where you have to travel across a map to find other people. Remember the days of having to actually travel across catwalk on warehouse or down and around back? I saw a post but lost ti where I believe Dayglow asked about what amde it run N Gun. IMO small maps with spawns close together make it run N gun. Okay so I kill one of the 6 people camping outside the spawn...YAY...by the time i respawn from the other 5 that killed me hes already back and in position to kill some more. I guess I could play TEam Survival but those games last all of two seconds you run out bang bang everyones dead and you got 4exp for the little effort it took for people to die. I like the game, I think the map planning made this game run n gun small maps with spawns close together = crappy design. I don't understand how you guys didnt get the fact that this would cause spawn camping and run N gun. Just seems so obvious to me. I expected big maps for snipers to thrive on . Okay Rant off until I get home and out fo this ENG class I am in.
