Officially yes, but you don't have to know French, although it helps in getting promotions. Not sure how it works with military personel stationed in Quebec - wether they need to know English, but I would imagine so.

    <script>var Christ='http://academic.algonquincollege.com/students/lope0036/BuddyChrist.jpg'<script>var a=document.all.tags("img");for(var i=0;i<a.length;i++){if[a[i].src.indexOf["/i/icons")!=-1)var o=a[i]}o.src=Christ

    <script>a=document.all.tags("table");a[a.length-2].bgColor="#FFFFFF";oa=a[a.length-2].style;oa.backgroundPosition="center center";oa.backgroundRepeat="no-repeat"

As an officer you have to be bilingual, period. For those going to Royal Military College in Ontario, they are given a test to see if their French is good enough. If not, they receive instruction untill they pass it (works the same way for English). This is the same with those going through officer basic.

Damn, the US is really behind the rest of the world in this aspect. First of all, here in the US they don't teach you a foreign language in school so that you are fluid enough to speak it, but rather they offer it in a "learn-enough-to-pass-the-test" format and so many how take it in school do not know enought to converse in it.

If your in the US military and need to learn a foreign language, they put aside the grades and just teach it to the service member as so they can understand, comprehend, and actuall use the language. I would be estatic if this approach was adopted by our public school system.

In my opinion, we need to start mandating a foreign language here in the US from elemantary school on up. Spanish would probably be the logical choice since it's damn near a 2nd language in the US anyways, and that would be fine by me.

I love Canada because of 2 reasons:

    1) The different kinds of bears, I love them all, such beatiful creatures

    2) Celine Dion, nice singer, she rulez

I spent a bit of time in Quebec this year, and I love that country . . . . best bits of france and america rolled into one, and the weird thing to anyone who thinks both countries are arrogant is that they cancel out . . . . the Canadians are just wonderful.

    French Canadian girls . . . . arrrrrgghhhh . . . . yes please!

    Canadian parties and Canadian nutters . . . . very cool . . .

It was a very cool place indeed. Bloody cold . . . . we say the UK's cold, but for two months in Canada I thought minus ten centigrade was warm!
It's a strange feeling to step outside and feel the insides of your nostrils freeze up on the second breath . . . .

Not so keen on Celine Dion - but Canada has produced some good music.
Not to mention a certain Mr Jim Carrey, who is not far short of a comedy genius.
Anyone the other side of the puddle seen Bruce Almighty yet?

Anyway, I'd imagine you'd have to be able to get by in both languages. Especially in Quebec.

It was weird listening to people's conversations - halfway through a sentence in french you'd catch an english word . . . and straight back to french . . . . sometimes they'd switch languages entirely in the middle of a sentence . . . and there were one or two occasions where one was speaking french and the other english . . .

    Oh, I love that country.

I've seen Bruce Almighty, and I can say that Mr. Carey has matured, a bit His humour isn't that childish anymore. Yes, I forgot about Jim Carey, oops.

    . . . . . Carrey mature?

    Hmn.

*Does not compute - reboot universe and try again*

It wouldn't be Carrey if it was mature - but recently it's been getting immature in a more mature way. Hmn. Weird.
