Thread: Patches won't install saying anim8.dll unkn version | Forums

Colorado USA: I purchased CMX from Amazon shop. I have CMX Ver 1.0.0 newly installed from CD with all defaults. When I try installing either patch 1.01 or 1.02, the installer says anim8.dll is unknown version. The CMX folder shows anim8.dll version 4.0.1.0 dated 7/21/2004 24,576 bytes from Mindscape, Inc. Looks ok to me. whats up?

Hmm, there are two things I can think of:

a)are you sure you had the US version of the patch? My guess is that you did. However, if you bought it on amazon.com, you might have the UK version of the game. you can get the UK patch here: http://chessmaster10.ubi.com/uk/patches.php

    b)reinstall the game, etc, etc.

Thanks for the quick response. Voila, the UK version patch did the trick. Not sure why I ended up with a UK version since I am in the US. What differences might I encounter? Also, was patching from 1.0.0 to 1.0.2 copacetic, or should I look for a 1.0.1 patch first?

I don't know of any differences within the game. The biggest differences between the US and UK English version are: the US version is normally sold in a cardboard box like most new video games, and the UK version is a sold in a DVD clamshell package. (So: no real difference after you find the game at the store)

The second difference is the UK version comes with a shorter printed manual. The full manual is still available on the CDs or via a link in the FAQ.

So, frankly I wouldn't worry about any differences.

Kind of makes you wonder why they even bothered to make two different versions...

    Legal reasons.

Computer software manufactors / distributors in the E.U. were afraid that consumer rights laws meant that the mostly empty cardboard boxes typically sold in US/Canada were misleading customers into assuming that there the box was full, either of digital content or printed manuals.

So, to clearly show that there is no (or minimal) printed documentation in the UK and much of Europe you will find the "reduced packaging" of the flexible plastic DVD "clam shell" for most games.

AFAIK, that's why. Market size and economics may have additional factors that I am not aware of.

But couldn't they sell the US version in a DVD clamshell too? I guess the cardboard box is probably slightly cheaper, but still... And that doesn't explain why they had to alter the software itself just barely enough to require different patches.
