I've searched and read what results I found but I've not really found the answer on how to get the Riven game to run on my new PC. Can someone give me the steps please? Thanks.

In general,
1. Install Riven to your C: drive, accepting the install defaults whenever possible.
----- 1. Do NOT install the game to an external drive, either USB or E-SATA.
2. Start Riven from a fresh boot.
-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications.
-- b. Disable all tasks running in the background, especially anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, task schedulers, remote system control programs (such as Microsoft NetMeeting) or other programs shown on the Windows task bar.
-- c. If you have only a software firewall, do NOT disable it!
-- d. Do NOT run any other programs before starting Riven.
3. Do NOT boot up with the Riven disc in the drive, or with any disc in the drive.
4. If the Riven disc autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
5. Start the game using the Riven icon on the Desktop, NOT the menu item on the disc.
Do steps 2 through 5, above, whenever you start Riven.
Suggestions:
If you have any external devices (USB, E-SATA, etc.), DISconnect all of them before installing (or starting) Riven.
1. Install:
-- a. The latest video driver from your PC's manufacturer or the manufacturer of your video card.
-- b. The latest sound driver from your PC's manufacturer or the manufacturer of your sound card.
Don't assume that you have the latest drivers - visit the appropriate websites to check!
Reboot when all driver installations are complete, and again try installing Riven.
2. Uninstall Riven, then use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter to re-install the game.
-- a. First, uninstall Riven using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs utility. (See Uninstall or change a program for details.)
----- 1. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see Turn Windows features on or off.
-- b. When uninstallation is complete, reboot, and re-install Riven to your C: drive using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. See Make older programs run in this version of Windows, "If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the troubleshooter...."
-- c. When re-installation is complete, reboot, and start Riven by doing steps 2 through 5 under "in general", above.
-- d. If Riven doesn't start or play properly, again run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
----- 1. First, try the Windows 95 and Windows 98/Windows ME modes under "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?" If neither of these modes helps, try all of the other modes.
----- 2. You can also make compatibility setting changes manually. Click on > To change compatibility settings manually in Make older programs run in this version of Windows, and read through all of the options. Various combinations of options are usually necessary.
3. If you're running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, install Riven in Windows XP Mode. See Windows Virtual PC and Download Windows XP Mode for details.

i know this thread is 2 years old but jeez, another dead end answer and ive been searching for over an hour.
i'm trying to install both riven and myst on windows 7 64-bit as well and getting real tired of all these cut and paste WRONG answers telling us to INSTALL it on c drive when the problem is the game doesnt install on W7 64-bit... AT ALL.
the disk doesnt run. i insert the disk and nothing happens. so as the OP said, step 1 fails, so i guess the person who answered, didnt comprehend.
if i browse to the install file on the disk and run it i get the following message:
how can riven and myst be installed on W7 64-bit?
puffidrez26,
My wife's HP Pavilion running Windows 7 64-bit had no trouble with the installation of Myst Masterpiece and Riven from the 10th Anniversary DVD. Her problems were with playing the games, which finally required us to install QuickTime v 4.1.2. What is your program source, i.e. original CDs, 10 Anniv. DVD, download, or what?

@puffidrez26
Before you tried to run it from the DVD did you send a copy of Setup.exe to your desktop right click that command Setup.exe and tried to install the game as an "administrator" ? And what compatibility mode did you choose ?if i browse to the install file on the disk and run it i get the following message:
Btw, if it is a digital download it could be due to a corrupted download( or to a possible virus or if you did use a Daemon tool).

Your chances of installing the ancient 5-CD version of Riven under Win 7 64-bit are not good!
Q. can anybody answer our question!
A. Read through ALL of this thread, especially my post of 08-04-2010, 09:40 AM. Actually TRY the suggestions! If none of that helps:
-- a. Go back to the Myst Community Tech Help Forum index page.
-- b. Do a Search (search box at upper right side of page) for Windows 7 64-bit Riven.
-- c. Read through the hit threads, and actually TRY the appropriate suggestions.
My best suggestion is buying the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition which contains updated versions of Myst (Masterpiece edition), Riven, and Myst III: Exile. Better chances, but no guarantees! (Do actually TRY the suggestions in my post of 08-04-2010, 09:40 AM.)
Also, my man, what's your problem with installing to C:? Which, BTW, is one of the things that solves lots of Riven install probblems....
