Thread: "Critical Exception" Freezing Game? | Forums

  1. #1
Hey all, new member here.. Finally got myself a nice pc so i picked up a copy of far cry from my local games shop and thought id have a go with it .

Installed the game, no problem.. Updated the game, no problem.. It started out playing just fine, nice and smooth at max settings. Until i got to the "wrecked boat" section in the training.. as soon as i get near the wreck the game just freezes. Sometimes i can hear copper/boat type noises but no matter what direction i come at the wreck from the game will lock up on me.

Upon hitting ctrl+alt+del i can get to the taks manager and can see another window in my task manager with the far cry logo called "critical exception", but i cant open it up as far cry is bumming up the desktop, and you guessed it, when i close far cry the critical exception box closes too.

I've neve had any problems with any other games, it just seems farcry doesnt like me or something .

    Here is my spec:

    Microsoft Windows Vista Buisness
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    EVGA Nvidia 8800 GTS 640MB (@ Stock)
    2GB DDR2-800MHz (@4-4-4-12 timings)
    ASUS P5B-E Plus
    500GB Western Digital SATAII HDD
    Samsung DVD-RW 16x SATA

All wrapped inside a nice Lian-Li PC 7b Plus II Case.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, as i REALLY want to play this game.. that start got me into it!

    Regards.

    Caff.

p.s. Before anyone asks, yes all my drivers are upto date as of today (13/07/07).

If you'd posted your dxdiag we could see your drivers version, i suppose it'll be well updated.
Could you check if this is of any help to you:

    Application Issues
"¢ General Antialiasing Problem with Top Games
We have found that some games running under Windows Vista enable 16x coverage sampling antialiasing (CSAA) when 4xAA is selected in the game menu, resulting in deflated performance on GeForce 8800 cards.
The problem occurs with NVIDIA Vista drivers 100.54 and later.
The same effect will occur in future Release 100 Windows XP drivers.
Affected applications found to date include:
    "¢ Battlefield 2
    "¢ Battlefield 2142
    "¢ Sin Episodes
    "¢ Half-Life 2
    "¢ Half-Life 2 Lost Coast
To set standard 4xAA in these applications, please set 4xAA in the game, and also enable "Enhance the application" antialiasing mode with a 4x antialiasing setting in the NVIDIA graphics driver control panel.
We are working with developers to implement better in"game CSAA support. You can see CSAA menu selections in Half-Life 2: Episode One and Supreme Commander.

Ahh thats pretty interesting.. ill give it a go.. my computer is set to "application controlled" graphical settings.

Just a quick update to this.. i got past this bit by turning the graphics in game to "2x AA" and i got about an hour further.. and the same thing happened. BUT this time i got this message from vista:

    Description:
A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Users\Caff\AppData\Local\Temp\DWD229.tmp\FarCry .exe.hu.kdmp
    C:\Users\Caff\AppData\Local\Temp\DWD229.tmp\FarCry .exe.xml

    Any ideas?

    Caff.

May be just a Vista 'bug'... just empty your C:\Users\Caff\AppData\Local\Temp folder, then try the game again, what happens?
