How does it determine how many you get? I have had games where I spend the whole game and get 8k points and get 12 points. The others I play for like 4 minutes get 3000 points and end up with 30. What gives?

I think you get more reaching a new level.
challenges count as well and im not sure but accolades and quality kills maybe?

If you go to the last session results, one of the options will show you the breakdown for the source of the credits. I only looked one time, so I don't know for certain what all of the sources are, but that time I got points for playing, winning, accolades, and leveling up. There may be other reasons for getting points, but it would be necessary to check several times to know.
