Do you hear some kind of animals growlin' chirpin' and stuff? At the end of Uru did you see some animals(looked like dark figures) past the cleft, beyond the fence, at the top of the volcano? I thought I saw something and heard them growling or yelling in that vacinity at the end of Uru:ABM. I also hear them bigtime when I go back to the caves where the totums were located. Where you place your hand upon the door and it opens to darkness and before you step in. Pause before linking to the cave and listen. My theory is that these creatures were enslaved(captured against their will) and made to work for the D'ni. Look in Eder Kemo, the garden age. The pictures are everywhere. I also think they were taken to Gahreesen to compete against the maintainers elite as the D'ni lords' sport. These I think were Yeesha's 'least'. I also think there is a picture in the museum on the DRC table. The larger creature on the bottom to the right. They were kept in the Teledahn age until they were ready for them to compete. I think they originally came from Negilahn. After the fall they just roam the city I think. That is why you hear the growling and cackling. Anyway, every time I go to the city I am scared the creatures might gang up on me and off me. Creepy! Freeky deeky! (Not really, I know it is a family game.) Just my take, what do you think?

Shorah troylawson! You are correct in your deductions! The creatures are called the Bahro. At least that's their D'ni name, it means beast, I hope they have a better name for them selves. It's not quit clear where they came from originaly but they have left their paintings around. Apart from the screams you won't see them in the city.
If you go to the D'ni Lore and History discussions you can find more theories about them.
And in some of the story threads around this forum you will find them participating in the story.

My second time playing through the game, I noticed Bahro noises all over the place in addition to the journey door caves. The last age I went through in ABM was Kadish Tolesa, and every time I touched a journey cloth, I heard them. I don't remember hearing that in the other ages, or when I touched journey cloths the first time I played the game, either. I also heard them in To D'ni, right near those coordinates (if you've finished To D'ni, you know where I'm talking about).

Playing UU, I've been hearing them when I touch journey cloths also... And then folks laughed when I was sitting in the neighborhood and heard them the first time, and made a big deal of it...
I hear them all over the city in UU, once in a while, anyway.

If you really want to hear them, the next time you go to a bahro cave, turn around and walk backwards slowly. Now that is an eerie experience.

Perhaps they're saying "Watch where you're going! You nearly stepped on my foot!"

Yup, I've done that. (Walked backwards into the cave, that is. Not stepped on their feet. That is, not that I know of....)

A while back I was reading through somebody's walkthrough and every time he got to a journey door he'd say "Run into the darkness" like there would be something terrible happening, or it wouldn't work somehow, if you didn't run. I've never found it necessary, and in fact I think it's kind of silly to run. I don't imagine the Bahro would be dangerous, if all you're doing is helping them out.
