Thread: 9800Pro extensive problems/challenges | Forums

  1. #1
    Hello

    I am running an all-in-wonder 9800Pro (128mb R360). I have encountered a few problems:
A few glitches appear (eg. rectangular forests over Murmansk) and Il-2 CTDs when put into perfect mode.
Also in SFP1 and X2TT: Game freezes and/or the screen goes black.

I have changed operating systems (from 98SE to XP -with 98 still as a dual boot), two sets of boxed divers, mother boards , hard drives and cases. There is no improvement!

What drivers should I be using? The problem is I don't know were to find them (or what edition of catalyst I should be using).

An additional issues is that this is a dual boot machine and I am not sure how installing two differents sets of drivers for the operating systems (XP and 98SE) may interact. Same goes for uninstalling them (especially if an automatic scrubber is used...)

    Thank you

    - Avimimus

    Could it be overheating?

Sounds like you've got a dual boot 98/XP on the same partition? (Meaning: both on drive C
    That's not a good thing...

If that's indeed the case, I would choose one OS (XP) and continue with a clean install.
(If still needing dual boot, make sure you have two partitions, C: with Fat32, install 98 on that partition, after that, install XP on a secondary partition (NTFS). This way, both OS's won't be interefering with eachother)

If you've already got two partitions, I'd do a re-install of XP, after a format of its partition (NTFS), so you get a clean start.
Then install all latest drivers (ATI 6.12?) (Better download them first, and burn 'm to a disk)

Concluding: Me thinks yer 9800Pro is either defective, ór your drivers are a bit messed up...
(I could very well be wrong here though, in that case, consider this a BUMP )

    Good Luck!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

May have just gotten some dust bunnys built up over time. Your glitches do sound like over heating issues. Turn your computer off, unplug the PSU from the wall socket and remove the card to clean the heatsink out of any dust bunnys in between the fins of the heatsink. May even be a good idea to remove the heatsink entirely an put a fresh coat of Artic Silver 5 thermal compund on the GPU. This will require an unistall of your current drivers. My CO is running the latest Cat 6.12's with his 9800XT and is very happy with them. Google "ATI Tweakguide" and read about the proper way to uninstall\reinstall your Cat drivers. Sure does save allot of typing. HEHE

Oh, & FoolTrottle is spot on about your partions. Heed his advice.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

As in other posts about the 9800pro (or any card for that matter), latest is not necessarily the best.

For example, I'm using cat 5.10's with my 9800pro. Anything newer gives me artifacting.

After your cleaning (both for dust and "driver residue", try going back 4-5 cat issues. Work up till a set causes you grief. Then go back one set and Bob's your uncle, you're good to go.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

    Thank you all!

I have installed 5.10 and the HQfoam dlls and now have water, resolution and speed.

    One final question:
In SFP1 I am suffering VPU (GPU?) crashes. This is especially true over specific terrains.

What steps should I take to identify the problem?

    Btw.
The two OS are on separate hard drives (which I figure is even better than partitions...)

    LIVE WITH THEM!!

Seriously, I got them constantly with that 9800. I mean like 4-5 times over a 3 hr span in the evening, every evening (every day too).

Over time, they have gone to none for days at a time. I did nothing (nor could I do anything) to alleviate the problem. It's a known issue with ati for literally years (hence the "send this error report" krapola. Don't bother sending it. You think they are going to work on years old technology (ie 9800)??

All the solutions I found did not work (forum boards dedicated to that very topic come to the same conclusion).

Sorry I can't be more positive. Hopefully time will cure it for you (cuz nothing I found did).

    EDIT:

This is a link to an Everquest forum (entry is dated april 2006) which posts some things to try. It's worth a shot. One is to disable fastwrites in bios. I did and it didn't help. BTW, I'm running cat 5.10 and experience only the occasional vpu now (like once in 6-7 hours of run time).
