Have never heard of anybody changing or upgrading a processor on a laptop. Can it be done? I have a HP laptop with a Core 2 Duo Centrino that runs about 1.5Ghz. This is too slow for me, although I have no intention of playing games like IL2 on it. I use it for mostly the internet and non-intensive games like Chessmaster 10th edition. It does ok with that.

I have had it for about a year now. I upgraded from 1Gb to 2Gbs of DDR2 Ram but it seemed like it was not worth the money I spent on the modules as far as performance improvements. I know for a fact that a faster processor would do the trick though.

This can be done but not by the average person. You should be able get a pc shop that does laptop work to change it out for you.
"The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.[Europe], under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep. If once [the people] become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, judges and governors shall all become wolves. " - Thomas Jefferson

Usually laptops don't have a "socket" like desktops; the CPU is soldered directly to the motherboard.
Even if you find a specialty laptop shop to do it, you'll be voiding any warranty you might have left- and even then, it seems like a rather risky proposition to desolder a CPU and resolder a new one.

I may be wrong however, and your laptop might have a removable CPU...
