    Hi All,
I've decided to expand my horizons and enter the world of WWII submarine sims.
I've been a long time player of the IL2 series of flight sims before now.
Just a quick question to put to you guys:
Would I be better buying SH4 with it's expansions or buying SH5?

    Hello Gratedleeman,

    Welcome.

I vote for SH4 with U-boats Mission, the expansion one.

Sort of like asking would you prefer a blond or brunette.

Seems SH5 is catching up with mods, but I still prefer SH4.

I'm biased since I've never played SH5, but I'd have to say that SH4 Gold Edition (the U-boat expansion...version 1.5) is one heck of a game.
    Mods only make it better.

Good choice. While waiting, read over the information in the stickies at the top. Any questions, just ask. We're all glad to help.
A little advice, start real slow. Make generous use of the tutorials. The first one is great to get use to the game controls, etc. The rest are terrific for practice. After that, go into the patrol or career. Start with the realism settings low, then gradually work up. Then add mods like TMO, RSRDC, etc. Welcome aboard and have fun.
The're in their bars, drinking, celebrating our sinking! Not yet my friends, not yet!

Have both SH4 Gold and MODs and SH5 with MODs - went from SH5 to SH4 - SH4 gameplay is better - SH5 graphics are better but the game is unfinished ending in 1943. You require a really good rig for SH5. I play SH4 all the time and rarely visit SH5.

    Well, it arrived yesterday!
I've so far spent most of the day running aground, accidentally ramming destroyers, tipping over lifeboats and firing torpedoes into the vast nothing of the Pacific while cargo ships go on their merry way.
It has been a very fun day of mishaps indeed.

You'll want try to avoid that in the future.

For starters, I'd suggest you change the options to remove manual torpedo settings and go to auto targeting. Less firing torpedos the wrong way. I still mostly use it, lol.
