Thread: Going Prone? | Forums

  1. #1
hey guys i just realised that in all 4 games of splinter cell we weren't able to do a simple move of lying prone, even with the list of complicated stealth moves.

i think lying prone is useful when there is not enough high cover to duck under ( even mgs4 has it ). in fact it is a basic move used in emergencies so im just wondering why it's not included in the games. the only time you could lie prone was when you needed to crawl through a very tight space like a vent.

    what are your thoughts?
I try to be impartial (and a little sarcastic) in my entertainment previews and reviews on Three And A Half Stars (http://threeandahalfstars.wordpress.com)

That's definitely something I'd like to see.

I haven't played MGS4, but I remember seeing a clip of Snake crawling over to a ledge on his stomach, and then sliding over to hang from it. I thought that was way cool, and very appropriate for Splinter Cell, too.

Vampire Rain lets you lay down/crawl also...

I think that devs designed levels so there was no need to go prone. Play a couple of missions and tell me how many times did you actually need to do it. Usually (if not always) the cover is high enough.

Really, the artificial borders in MGS4 really look dated whereas a reallife agent should be able to jump up and scale obstacles. It made MGS4's level design less than realistic in places.

"Total" is kind of a strong word...Vampire Rain is what happens when a cheesy B horror movie is crossed with a stealth game.

Have you seen the gameplay sections ? a 5 to 95 % stealth - shooting ratio and the ingame graphics suck so hard... i get a limp one immediately.

This is one of those games which mixes all the wrong ingredients for all the wrong reasons done by lack of talent.

MGS4 is still a very good game, although I'll have to backpedal on my initial score, since there's less actual sneaking in it than i thought. Hmmm... it's an 8.7 out of 10 to me nowadays.

Knot, that's completely untrue. In MGS you can sneak through the whole game except the forced gunfights, such as when the Rex's are storming the room. If you think there was to much gunfightin then you obviously didn't do a good enough job of hiding

On the contrary. Srry, but you got me all wrong there.

Act 1. Great. Lots of urban sneaking & CQC-ing the hell out of those bastards.

Act 2. Subsistence-ish sneaking. However ; it felt less than convincing if PMC alert got raised if Snake kills a PMC, while militia have just slaughtered a dozen. Mysteriously, the PMC detect "We've encountered a new type of enemy".
Srry, Kojima, but the whole side with either faction just didn't work out 100% to your vision.

Act 3. Urban night stalking. Refreshing... yet, i felt it lacked something....I guess THIS would be where a thing such as 'crowd' and social stealth would add something in positive ways.

Act 4. A great memorable and nostalgic return to Shadow Moses. .....BUT..... no human guards / sneak up on guard = CQC stealth gameplay out-of-the-window.

Act 5. sneaking & CQC makes a short-lived return. From there on it's boss fights & cutscenes to the end.

So, to me... MGS4 is only a true sneaking game in Act 1, 2 and the beginning of Act 5.
Really, I need a game to be at least 80% sneaking + interaction with a humanoid enemy force to be a potential 'ultimate stealth game' to me.

People need to understand that Splinter Cell is all about Stealth and real life occurences of an real agent. MGS plays a bit of stealth but it is mostly a movie with all the cutscenes with a very fictional story. The one thing that stands out is that Hideo Kojima uses examples in the series like PMCs or the popular belief that the US is owned by the super rich (Patriots). The very ideas also couldn't be more true or influencial since everyone is predicting PMCs will be utilized more than standard military in the near future. As of prone positions, its not needed until the devs can create scenarios that require it.
