this thread is dedicated for fights... simple really... every once in a while a new discussion is brought about two creatures facing eachother... who would win? and you don't have to think of it stats-wise... I mean you don't have to consider their speed or attack/defense... you can come up with your own stories... let me start:

p.s you can also add imaginary arenas, situations and others...

1 Grand elf vs 2 Marksmen in a Forest filled with tall bushy trees. who would win? and how?

    Why this question?
but sticking to the subject, are we talking HH3/4 or even5?
if we talk about 3 the marksmen have it in the bag, four the grand elf, 5 maybe the elf could go either way.
If we're on about fantasy, the arena will instantly give the elf the master advantage, why not say a dwarven warrior vs. a elven blade dancer.
the question you gave, grand elf Vs. 2 Marksmen, is unfair towards the elf, even though he does have the advantage, for elves tend to give themselves to the dextruse side of combat, humans are the jack of all trades, so you put the elf's style against his obersite, the dwarf, Dwarves use brute strength, Elves use dex, this would should their skills and displince put to the test, and have it even numbers to make it fair. But the terrian does make a large home advantage, espalliy against thier opperosite, forests and mountian dwarves, and to use the tarrian you could say
"A elven ambush of 6 Grand Elves attack a Dwarven Caravan Guard of 10 Dwarfs."

the Idea is not to make it fair... the Idea is to create an imaginary battle on the arena given between the two sides. create some sort of story... give them names, or whatever... but stick to the numbers and the arena...

Just as an example I'll try to liven your scenario:

"The dwarves return from a day full of wood cutting, a grand elf squad (made of 6 grand elves) was sent to put a stop to the dwarves butchering...

the dwarves were walking in a loose formation on a road leading to their randevouz carrying the wood on their shoulder with one hand and an Axe in the other...

*wooom* an arrow slices through the leading dwarf and sends him down. the dwarves, dazzled, look all around to find out where it came from *woooom* another arrow sticks a second dwarf right between the eyes. they automaticly split up and start searching for the killers. 1 dwarf senses something wrong and listens carefully, he evades an arrow passing right by his face. he runs towards the elf he saw shooting it with his axe and with a roar ofcoure... the elf, pulling out his sword, stares at him with fear. the dwarf reaches him with his axe up high and slashes him right in the face."

yada yada... the rest of the dwarves get killed and the elves win with one casualty. you see what I mean now?

Ok, got nothing better to do now :

    Once upon a time,
A little boy called Tanis found the entry to a large large cave. Well, he reported his finding to his father who was the chieftain of scvenbrew village.
Noone dared to walk into the cave because at night you could hear strange sounds coming out of there. The village of scavenbrew was divided by a river called the tear of Eldrath.
It had been a dull and rainy weather for month and the tear of eldrath arised and got more and more water. The village was in the threat of getting awashed. So the chieftain, knowing the secret entrance to the cave decided to lead his villagers to the cave and wait there till the weather would get better. As the first villagers entered the cave there was calm but eerie atmosphere. Everywere bones, even human bones. There was no choice, the rest of the villagers entered too, the rain was lashing around and the water was rising more and more.
As the last villager , a small girl entered, a loud dark unhuman voice coming out of the dark roared:" Ahhh, fresh meat!"

    The End

I thought you wanted HoMM stories, not diablo I dungeon level 2 or 3 about the butcher, stories... But on that note, 1 ghost vs 6 stacks of 10 peasants? I think the ghost simple because once she attacks 2-3 peasants will go down and then it becomes 3-4 ghosts. I love ghosts so much.. I used to ***** them in the dos version of HoMM 1 where once you had a certain amount of units you couldn't control them anymore... I'd have a stack of like 30 ghosts they'd rape some unit stack then go out of control and pwn me... haha Dos is fun!

Not Diablo stories... youre supposed to make it up... and it doesn't have to be Heroes Combat Related, I mean don't relate to the stats and special abilities (you can, but try to show it through a story)... and it doesn't have to be long as well.

here's another: 1 Silver Pegasi vs 1 Green Dragon out in the Open Field...

The Silver Pegasi wins, because the Dragon is Smaugs son, Buldur, so it has a bare spot on itâ´s under side. The Pegasi and itâ´s Elven knight, Gandr, quickly dive and take down the Dragon, unfortunatly the elven prince is poisoned by the dragons blood.

Who will win, the Dragons older brother, Finn the Red Dragon, or Gandr (remember he is poisoned and thus not up to his best abbilitys)and his Silver Pegasi?
I see you - when I turn away
I hold you -when my hands are full
I kiss you - when you aren't here

Never shall you be more than a name to me

A paladin is walking in the dead fields of the necrorealms, he is brave and confidant, just a few kilometers back he had vanquished 30 ghosts. He sees a sword carved in the earth... a battlefield from ages ago. He walks aware, after a few steps bones rises from the ground, the paladin don't think twice and smash the skeleton with his shield, another rises behind him, he turns with the sword and cuts the skeleton in half. After half hour of battle the paladin killed around 130 skeletons, and is proud of his deed. Then, bones arises from his foot to the horizon. At distance, Sandro laughs in a throne.
"Another fool fell, what a lovely day."

    How about that?

    "That is not dead
    Which can eternal lie
    And with strange aeons
    Even death may die"
