Applies to both offline and online but more severe in offline.
Sound becomes muffled, dulled and very faint a few seconds into a mission. Sound starts off rich and vibrant but soon becomes faint and barely audible (typically just after engine start up)
The odd part is that a loud boom like a flak or an exploding bomb will restore the sound to normal but then it will revert back to being muffled.

Basically start up any offline or online game and on my system, problem starts.

The first thing I did was play theblackdeath track to see if the patch made any FPS difference (it didn't), but I did notice exactly what you describe. On theblackdeath track the sound becomes muffled at the 00:36 mark and does not return to normal until it loops. Also note that the voices aren't muffled but everything else is.

Excellent point Fillmore. I failed to mention that fact. You're right though, pilot voices remain clear and stable the whole time. Damn, I really hope this issue gets fixed because I do a lot of single player campaigning.

I have noticed in several missions online the same problem but to a different degree.
Sound cuts about in half-- very faint.. but i hear flak guns, AAA and loud booms like they were right on my shoulder even when the nearest action was at least 20 miles away.
it is like that horrible junk that is played when you are in the screen selecting the field is filtering in.
espically in the e4b, e7's and f2's-109 series i could barley hear the engine start it was like having your sound turned up but then you decided to put in earplugs.
I tried adjusting the sound from the panel in game. DirectX 8 / 16 channel etc. and varying the quality. but to no advail. you still hear the junk in the background.
Several of the pilots of our squadron were practicing last night and most of us had the same result. One memeber even was worried that the way the event happend that his speaker was about blown out from the blast from the guns while everything in cockpit was very faint.
All the while the voice was fine over our comms on Teamspeak.
Hard to fly when you can't hear your engine.. i miss those lil pings and rattles.

This is EXACTLY what happens to me. I start the mission, I hear a loud engine type of sound for half a second, then all sound is gone except for the voices.
I tried every combination of sound setting in the game and with setup.exe.

I have same exact problem, just about every sound setting tried. My soundcard is Hercules Muse 5.1 DVD. IL-2 is installed on the same system and sounds perfect.
