Thread: Quick ATI question! | Forums

  1. #1
Hopefully I will be the proud owner of an X1950 pro in the near future.Currently I have an X800 fitted. Now the question is: Do I uninstall the cat 7.11 driver, reboot blah blah blah, then put the new card in and re-install the cat 7.11,or can I just swap the cards over without uninstalling the drivers first.
I think that the first option is the way to go,but just wanted some opinions first

Well that was supposed to be a quick question, but looks incredibly long winded when typed!

I would take the first option.
Keep the 7.11 cats though - they work great on the X1950 Pro. In case you do distributed computing like Folding@Home, also get the GPU optimized version from them to use the 1950 for computations - factor 50 speed increase compare to the CPU optimized one - the power of paralel processing... I hope Oleg will use it in BoB

You will find that you will need to uninstall and reinstall the drivers anyway. If you leave the drivers alone and just remove the X800 & install the X1950, you will see that the card will not recognize that you already have the drivers installed. So you will end up uninstalling & reinstalling the driver any way.

Try just switching cards first. I did the same when i shifted from an 8xx to a 1950Pro, and the Catalyst Centre picked up the new 'presence' and identified it correctly on the installed hardware page.

That was before 7.11 though, and I noticed there was a Microsoft update required when I put in the PCI Express card later.

PS - good job, btw - pleased for you

OK just for a laugh (not much else going on around here ) I put the X1950 in without uninstalling the drivers, and as I suspected it did not pick them up.a quick uninstall/reinstall later and its all up and running!
