Thread: 56K connects. DSL doesn't. | Forums

  1. #1
Welp, I just switched over to DSL with Verizon.

Wow. The pages load faster than I can open new ones or maximize the windows. Whee. Forgotten what broadband was like!

Anywho, I JUST plugged the DSL modem in, have no firewalls, or anything of that sort up and running (Heeeeeere haxx0rz haxx0rz haxx0rz) and...

Whaddya know, the Uru Patcher won't update.

On 56K, the 'Checking for Updates' little bar/window would be open for on average about two seconds, and either flash full and restart, or not flash at all and load the launcher.

On DSL, it stays open for a good 10-15 seconds, flashes full, and restarts. Does it four times, then says it couldn't update after three attempts. (BTW, math iz gud. Lern math. Math wood fix teh four/three text arror.)

Now, 56K would be a bit hit/miss and spotty with the updating, but on average I'd get through more often than not. Occasionally it wouldn't update after 3/4 attempts, but most of the time it'd get through on the second or third try.

Tonight, two tries, make that three, and still not getting through.

So what's the point of this post?

It's not a bug report (though if the devs see it, it'd be nice for them to say so so I wouldn't have to wade through their site to send the bug report to them), it's a "If you're having problems, try a dial up service or different ISP for once," post. Because this DSL isn't working right now, at least for patching.

You know, I have encountered the same problem when I switched over to a DSL with Verizon. I wasn't able to figure out why it was doing that, so I was hoping that the update was looping like that because I have not yet been invited into Live (I didn't register until 12/7, when I switched to DSL). I'd be interested to know if you get it fixed, or if anyone else has any ideas......

On a slightly differet note, I don't know if your Verizon/DSL package was like mine, but part of my deal was switching to MSN from AOL. Just an FYI, if you are switching, I'd recommend not doing the "import data from AOL" option for your email, mailboxes, etc. After I did that, my new DSL system slowed down to it's pre-dsl operating speeds, and my Uru game slowed down as well. Anyway, I've finally got my system back to operating correctly and I'm going to try and re-install Uru today to see if that fixes the lag.

Lyrilo - please post what you did to get your system back to operating correctly. Your experience is likely to help other folks!

Then I switched to Windows XP from ME (DON'T LAUGH!) and my DSL is... just like a 56K. Frustrating.

Interestingly enough, just before switching to XP I was downloading about seven seperate files on my DSL, so my connection was pretty bogged down. I tried connecting to Uru, and Voila! it connected. Slowly, slower than 56K, but it connected.

    Very odd.

Moleculor - sounds like you need to do some registry tweaking for max DSL performance. If you're interested, we can start another thread in that regard.

And IMHO, switching from ME to almost anything else doesn't merit laughter, but rather very loud applause!

Speedguide.nethas everything you need for tweaking your broadband connection.

The patch not downloading might be releated to the automatically detect settings in IE connection dialog. Make sure its disabled and try again.

Hmmmm. Whether Speedguide.net has 'everything you need' is a matter of opinion, of course. And then there's the personal experience aspect, which can come out on a site like that, but which may not be directly applicable to Uru on-line.

Datasage - if there's interest in a DSL tweaking thread, do you have some reason why we shouldn't start one?

I'd be interested in a DSL tweaking thread. Although I'm not that savvy about this stuff, so I shouldn't be the lead tweaker.

In response to you question about what I did to get my system running better, I did a system restore in Windows XP to restore my operating system to a date before I did the AOL data transfer, and did some general hard drive clean up (defragmenting, etc.). I also just reinstalled URU and futzed with my graphic settings to get that to run better. I seem to have some improvement, but I still can't complete the update. However, I just realized that my firewall is active, so I'm going to switch that off and see if I can get the update to work. I'll post again if it works.....

EDIT: After disabling my firewall in XP, I was able to complete the update. However, it still looped several times before it actually worked.
