Thread: Watched "Run Silent, Run Deep" on TCM | Forums

Although I haven't read the book from which the movie is "adapted" (in the loosest sense of the term, as I'm reliably informed), I can say that the movie makes clear that the action takes place in 1943. The opening scene is sometime in 1942 - then we move to Pearl Harbor "one year later".

As Mescator noted, the sub "looked at least like a Gato." My initial assessment was Gato or Balao. Then I caught the hull number in one shot: SS-395. A Balao. In fact, I was reasonably certain I'd had that boat in-game. I checked and, sure enough, it was the Redfish. I verified this on IMDB.

As for number of torpedoes, they actually got that right. In two separate attacks, the sub fired tubes 1-4 for a total of 8. While being depth charged, one of the torpedoes jarred loose and the motor started. That one would probably have been subsequently jettisoned, making it 8+1=9 from 24 leaving 15. Sure enough, in a bit of dialogue, the COB says something along the lines of, when has a sub in fighting shape ever returned to Pearl with 15 torpedoes.

Actually I thought I saw at least two different subs used for the exterior shots. I seem to remember there were inconsistencies in the forward AA gun being there and not in some shots.

You may be right. It wouldn't be the first time that multiple subs were used. However, IMDB says:
    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">
Exterior shots of the USS Nerka at Pearl Harbor were really the USS Redfish (SS-395) at the naval submarine base in San Diego, California. This is where the film was partially shot. The US Navy lent the USS Redfish to the production for filming this movie. 'The Hollywood Reporter' announced in August 1957 that filming would be conducted on the USS Redfish.
    </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Added to the shots of the Redfish docked in San Diego there were shots of the same boat underway.

One thing worth considering is that there were quite a few sound stage shots on a conning tower with rear projection. Those shots may well have had AA guns that didn't appear on the exterior shots of the Redfish.

Here's what IMDB says of the soundstage:
    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">
Interior scenes were filmed at the Samuel Goldwyn Studio with more than $500,000 worth of real submarine equipment on loan from the Navy. The 'Los Angeles Times' reported in September 1957 that this amount worth of equipment and instruments had been dispatched by the US Navy Department for the interior sets of this movie's submarine. As such, these sets were authentic with no dummy, fake or mock-up sub sets.
    </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Although IMDB talks only about "interior" (meaning, inside the sub) shots, there were shots that were supposed to be on the bridge but, as I said, clearly employed rear projection on a sound stage.

With respect to interiors and USN equipment, I commented above about the real TDC used in the movie. What a gas to see that baby operating. I'm informed by a buddy of mine, who is a WW II sub aficionado, that there is only one remaining functional TDC. I don't recall which sub it is on.

I think the Pampanito's TDC is the operational one.

I toured it back around '05, long before I got into this game. Looking back at the photos I took on the tour, I kick myself for their lack of good subject matter. I knew nothing about what I was looking at at the time and was just snapping pics. There are a few good things I caught by accident, but I would love to go back now that I know a bit about the equipment.

Here's probably the best pic I got:

i've watched the movie in low def but it was great one thing i might point out is they seamed to incounter enemy vessles more often than in real warfare put together how many us submarines sunk how many ships each sub on average sunk 6 ships throughout the war

I think that if a new script was written based heavily on the book, and the right cast, it could be a summer blockbuster.

Speaking of movies, is any modder going to come out with a pink "skin"? I know it doesn't affect the AI's detection ability. [IMG:top] [/IMG]

Responding to donna577 - I presume the reference is to Operation Petticoat. There has been some discussion about this movie on the forum. I was the main instigator since I had one captain named "Archie" Leach and another named "Bernie" Schwartz.
