counter counter counter! use the short blade, as it's faster than your sword, and you can use throwing knives if you have the space... take your time with it... thats how i got though it.

after beating the game, I went back and played this fight out a few times. I won it with the short blade and the sword. Be sure if you use the short blade that you time your counter correctly, if not you will get the dreaded punch in the stomach that knocks you down a few. Also, I found out that if you use this tactic it can be rather simple: Use the sword...wait for them to attack, once they do QUICKLY use your counter (since most of the times at this point the counter just kicks them to the ground) Ok so now you have one of your enemies on the ground and you have sword in hand BUT your auto target changes you to another person......so what I did was IMMEDIATELY after kicking one of the templars to the ground, HIT L1 to RE-LOCK onto him and give him a couple quick lashes and he will be dead...its literally no fight whatsoever...was...rinse...repeat
...on robaire? this does not work, for some reason you can't inflict damage while he is down, so all i did was switched to short blade and everytime i kicked him down, i ran as far away as i could, and threw a few throwing knives his way as he came back for me...literally no damage once again...
if you can time the short blade right, its perfection...thats what I used at the VERY end for every single fight

OK--so Im so pissed off because Im suck getting my butt killed by Robert's crusaders. I pull out the short blade, I go into counter mode, and I do my best to stay locked on to targets that I have knocked down so that I can slice em up. here is Teh problem.
Why is it that the counter only works about 33% of the time? When am I suposed to hit 'X'? Is it when the enemy begins their attack, or when the sword is about to colide with me?
I am so frustrated beause I feel that I am controlling it correctally, however, I always get the damn 1-2 combo from the crusaders--even when I believe that I am countering correctally.
UGH---WHY WONT THE COUNTER WORK?

How I beat it-
Run out of the courtyard and directly up the short ladder. Run across the roof, turn around and start throwing knives immediately. You can knock off about 4 or 5 guys right away.
Once you get into combat, USE THE COUNTER MOVES! Once I get tossed off the roof, I draw my long sword and finish things up.

The more powerful enemies in the game have better armor. They must be tired out before you can kill them with a counter. Before they are tired you will just knock them down. But after a bit, usually the 3rd one without otherwise damaging them, your counter will kill them. Use the defense breaker once you have it and you can get in a quick swipe. Even a little damage and your next counter might connect.

I have found the same exact thing. Also, i have noticed that the short blade kills quicker on counters, but isnt as good at parrying as the sword.
When you knock down a templar, make sure you do a quick power attack, and maybe a follow up the knocked down crusader, like stated before.
Also, with the counters, you cant simply start button mashing the counter button. If the enemy starts a strong attack (you will be able to notice this, it takes much more time) you will usually have to delay your counter until the sword is about to strike you. Be very careful trying to counter too many of these though. Strong attacks are usually easier to counter, but also, if you miss the counter, you will take two life bar damage, and the enemy, if good enough, will usually follow it up with a punch dealing another 2 damage. Though, if the enemy is also good enough, he will knock you off your guard, then follow up with a quick attack. Counters are a risk-reward styled combat maneuver.
Test all of this for yourself out as much as possible, to get your timings down. Do this with the short and long blade so you can perfect it.
Fighting Robert is a challenge. I was very conservative, and only countered at times when i knew i would win. When i knocked him down, i would run to the other side of the tiny arena and let him chase me, this allowed me to regain health. I repeated till eventually Altair assassinated Robert and the battle was over.
Then you get to carry on to a few even more challenging fights.
(off-topic: ever notice that Assassin's Creed contained about a million fights that you believed shouldve been the last!? I absolutely loved it! The last hour was very intense and very enjoyable because of that.)

Omfg! you guys , no offense suck! You obviously do not know how to counter proberly if you keep dieing to his Crusaders! I lost around 4 sync bars in the fight with them and 3 to Roberto so all together 7. You need to keep it on low profile so you can block the attacks. If they defense break you and leave you open to an attack, dodge the attack at the right moment. When you kick them to the ground, after you have kicked a crusader at least twice, when you counter you should kill him. If not kill them when they are on the ground. When you are up to Roberto you keep kicking him to the ground back when he is on the ground lash at him and you should kill him.
Also you guys need to be patient. Don't go out attacking them, swinging wildly. Then you will just die easily. The fight took me at least 3-5minutes because I was patient and grab-brake, dodged and countered. I only attacked them when they were on the ground or when there was 1-2 left before Roberto.
USE THE SWORD IN THIS FIGHT! OTHER'S MIGHT SAY THE SHORT BLADE WORKS BEST. BUT IT DOESN'T IN THIS SITUATION! UBISOFT EVEN SAY SO THAT THE SWORD SHOULD BE USED IN A LARGE FIGHT AND THE SHORT BLADE ONLY USED TO PARRY THE ATTACKS.
BE PATIENT AND WAIT FOR THE RIGHT TIME!

you can use your hidden blade just lock on at start of fight then switch to it and counter .one hit kills for everybody.
