Thread: Flight Jackets... | Forums

I've been looking at flight jackets as I need a new coat and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good deals. I'm looking at the G-1 mil. spec. jackets. So far this is the best deal I've found: http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/4370 , any other recommendations?

There is a thread running on PPrune about Jackets at the moment in the Military Pilots section and it refers to this companies......

    Costs a little more though

    http://www.pprune.org/military-aircr...ckets-one.html

and this is the one on the company they mention.....
In Calfskin which is as they say stronger it is $70 more

    http://www.popsleather.com/prod_v2.php3?prod=8

In Goatskin as the one you show it is $20 less from them and has more features, indeed you can tailor both of them to suit your requirements and "All apparel are made to order with your measurements". .... you are also dealing with the manufacturer too, which has got to be a good thing as you also cut out the middleman. Additionally you can have extra concealed pockets and removable collars at no extra charge

Says it all really "Pilots up to and including flag officers routinely buy the Pop's Leather style coat with requested improvements and wear it with no problems as a uniform coat."
    http://www.popsleather.com/prod_v2.php3?prod=48

I hope that is of some help to you, that PPrune thread was timed to perfection

Interesting add ons you can pay for lol

Standard Gun Shaped Carry Pocket($40)Click here for concealed handgun carry modification.

They also do name tags and nose art for them, check the links and

Pop's Leather has improved individuals' issued military leather flight jackets for nearly 30 years. Since 1990 we've modified over 50,000 issued Air Force A-2 and U.S. Navy\Marine Corps G-1 leather flight jackets, including improving jacket modifications done by others. The original design of the coats saved money by limiting the quantity of leather needed and the outside pocket layout discouraged aircrews having their hands in them. Currently issued "modified" A-2 jackets only partially fixed some of the design problems.

That does look like a good option. It's not precisely "period" but if I were really serious about going WWII accurate I'd be looking at $600-$1000+, lol. The one I linked to is made by the Cockpit company, formerly known as Avirex and is one of the actual contractors for the navy. Although a modern contractor would be using modern spec materials which are probably lower quality.

Keep the suggestions coming folks, I like to comparison shop, lol.

Good thing I'm not looking for a RAF jacket: http://www.cockpitusa.com/store/prod...at=338&page=3, thats expensive, lol!

I have a 70's vintage G-1 my dad picked up while on a carrier, would never fit me even if I lost the extra weight, lol. Needs the knit reworked but with a little conditioner the leather is in great shape. Too bad it wouldn't fit.

Enlarging ($48) The original design of the A-2 coat is ''tight'' in the chest and torso. Aircrews usually order a size larger than normal. However, even doing this the basic design cut of the coat is still restrictive. Most people with a size larger coat can make the coat more comfortable by just getting our Underarm Extensions option. If not, we can enlarge the coat, A-2s and G-1s, 4'' by placing two 2-inch vertical leather pieces into the vertical seam on the sides of the coat. We must replace the knit waist using Pop's higher quality knit material and we replace the wrist knit to match, so do not order replacement cuffs and waistband with enlarging as it's included. We match the leather material and color. Please note that the expansion ends at the armpit, the coat will not be enlarged above this point.

Refurbish. Pop's Leather will replace panels, repair, or refurbish your damaged coat. Please call or email us to discuss your requirements. You'll have to send your coat to Pop's so they can inspect your coat and give you a repair estimate. You'll be initially charged shipping only and this is non-refundable. After you receive the estimate and approve work, we'll charge your credit card appropriately. Pops will not recommend this work unless they can positively match the shade and texture of leather or improve the look of you coat.

Replace Cuffs and Waistband ($24) Pop's Leather uses a very high grade tightly woven polyester knit which holds its elasticity extremely well, much better than the material on issued coats.
