Thread: Am I the only one who hates assassinate? | Forums

  1. #1
Forgive me if this has already been posted. I read through a bunch of assassinate-related posts, but didn't see this.

I hate assassinate. Hate it. I get how it can be for some people, but I just don't enjoy it. I finally got to playing it for a solid block tonight and did well at first, then awful. But it was like I was raging. I was..... bored.

Here's where I think it falls apart. It's a you-lock-before-the-other-guy-locks game which means the targeting is key. But the targeting is not good enough to be a key point of the game. It was always an assist, but not necessary part, of the other gametypes.

And if you are lucky enough to lock first, your target sees it go red and bolts. What's the point? Why is it that if I'm in a 6 person blend group, I should be given away because I spotted the chump walking solo?

For the game to really work (1) targeting needs to be made more accurate, and (2) there needs to be a delay, 3-5 seconds, between locking on somebody and their compass going red.

I've seen a few complaints about Assassinate.

This is the most well-thought-out explanation for why someone hates it, as far as I've seen.

I personally disagree, because I'm usually fairly good with locking on, and I find that it takes a LOT of getting used to the locking system to understand it properly.

And I REALLY enjoy locking onto someone who's just come into my line of sight from AGES away, making them panic, and watching on the off-chance they run towards me instead of away (surprising how often it happens). Or drop ALL their abilities at once, so I know they're safe to approach.

At first I didn't like it much. It has it's flaws, several of which you pointed out in the OP, that keep it from being as good as it could have been. The more I play it, though, I have to admit, it's growing on me. For the past 2-3 days it's pretty much all I've played, and it's not a coincidence that as I've gotten better my enjoyment of Assassinate has gone up immensely. I still rage from time to time at some of the inconsistencies within the mode, it's just not enough to keep it from being fun as long as you're doing fairly well. I sort of felt the same way with Wanted for a while, but again, the better I got at it the easier it was to cope with it's flaws and imbalances.

While there are several annoying aspects to Assassinate, I do find that you can alleviate most of them on your own if you adjust your playstyle. For example you talked about it being a "you-lock-before-the-other-guy-locks" game, which in some ways is true. However as I noted in another thread, you can always let somebody lock on to you first and punish them with a defensive ability to get the stun / kill if you aren't certain whether or not you got the initial lock. People who camp in blend groups can be ignored altogether or exposed via fireworks. I can't defend the locking system though, it definitely needs a lot of work and is probably the biggest annoyance I have with Assassinate as it stands now.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of Assassinate is that at no point does the game stack the deck against the player like they do in Wanted when you have the lead and they put half the lobby against you. When you're doing well in Assassinate you never have to worry about lifting your foot off the gas pedal at any point. You also get to set the pace within the match to your liking, something I've always found to be pretty nice. There's also far less running and roofing going on in my experience, which has always been my biggest pet peeve with Wanted.

    Fixed that for you.

I don't mind having to play defense when in the lead in Wanted.

I DO mind being in 6th/7th/8th with 3 - 4 pursuers, and it's been happening more often lately (since about 3 - 4 days before the new DLC came out I've noticed it happening to me more consistently).

Yeah I've had that happen before, usually when you're playing against lower level players the game puts multiple pursuers on you even when you're out of the top three.

I don't mind playing defense so much, as I'm pretty good at it, but I don't like the paranoia that comes with always having three pursuers on you while you hunt your target.

before much detail was known except for locking on to get contracts... i was thinking that the purser indicator would blow your cover and ruin the stealth... after learning of the flash i was even more worried.

After seeing it in action i am actually really happy with the lock on and red flashing... the goal is to kill quick and not even let them know they have a purser the moment they see that red dot and flash it means they lost this one.

like obliviondoll said locking on a purser in the distance is not about claiming your target.. but scaring and making them nervous.

You're definitely not the only one to hate it. I cannot stand it. I keep playing it as I'm trying to like it, but I just don't enjoy it. Almost all the games I've been in have been the least stealthy thing ever. I don't have fun playing it at all.

Every time I try it I go back to Wanted. I guess Assassinate just isn't for me. Which is sad because all the rubbish I've heard about "you need skill to identify players in this mode" made me think I'd be good at it, if there's anything I can do really well in this game, it's identify players. From experience though, the players are the ones running around like fools, on rooftops and fast walking towards blend-groups. There's no skill involved in knowing who they are...

One thing that I do like though, and would have liked to be in Wanted, is the ability to lock on to your pursuer and drop them down to discrete (when it works, I think lag affects this quite heavily in Assassinate). I almost always know who my pursuer is, but due to cool-downs and (mainly) lag you can't always pull off a stun. Even when you've known for a while they were after you.

I've noticed with the best players there's more running. It might be more fun for some, but those people should play Call of Duty. Running up to a player while they are in a kill and then at the last second locking and getting an incognito is absurd. There's nothing stealthy about it.

People like Starscream literally are in high profile almost the entire game and then simply pop firecrackers whenever they are near someone blended to see who it is. He wins with a lot of points, but usually has the most deaths too. How is having the most or second most deaths a good round?

I have to say, I've had more fun with this mode when I'm completely screwing around. Staying on roofs the entire time trying to get untouchable is fun.

Oh and the post above reminded me. Has anyone noticed a ton more lag in assassinate? Mute was so useless that I dropped it. The worst one was when I spawned next to a player right at the start of a game. Locked on, got the contract, hit kill, he dodged (with no ability) then killed me without stunning me.
