I can't check anything - that is the only screen that is available to me in the game.

The settings are on the game launcher.
If you click the game in steam, it should start the Ubi Launcher - the screen where you press 'play' to start the game?
In the top corner there should be an settings, click that.
Then you should see a settings screen pop up and the save options are in there?
-
Nope. I press the "play" button and it launches straight into the game without any launcher appearing.

So you don't see the Ubi Launcher at all?
If you got the game via steam, you select the game in your list and select play now - that should then launch the Ubi Launcher.
The part with the 'Play' button on?
Well - on the Ubi Launcher - which is where you would have signed in and linked the game to Uplay - there is a settings button.
It's in there you need to alter the save games.
Very odd the game is just starting - without the launcher?
You may need to contact support then - since the easy fix - may not be so easy on your system for some reason.

I got my game via Steam, but there is no Ubi Launcher. I can't really rephrase this to make it much clearer. When I press "Play" in Steam, the screen shows a Steam window with the "loading" status, then the screen switches straight into fullscreen mode.
At no point in the installation process was I asked anything, let alone whether I wanted to also install a launcher. At no point has Steam even mentioned such a launcher. So no, I can't turn off syncing.

Just very odd, since all copies of from dust should ship with the Ubi Launcher - from the information I have, since you need to sign into a Ubi account to play the game.
That may be why you are having the problem.
So - you have to contact support and they will help.

Yeah but ive seen the 'none legal' version that bipasses the launcher so there is no internet connection needed but is very buggy.
Hence why ppl dont like the DRM.
But if it is the legal version. It sounds like the launcher is being blocked.
There is a link that some ppl have found out that enables connection and runs the game.

This is the first I've heard from Ubisoft that I need another external application - other than Steam - to run this game. The Steam Store page says that it uses "Ubisoft Online Service" as DRM without any explanation, and the rest of the page makes no mention of it.
Now you tell me that I need a second external application to run this game, so I hope you understand that I'm pretty unimpressed with the situation to this point. What the hell? Even GFWL has the good grace to use an overlay; why can't your service, if you must use it?
In what way, precisely, would I be better served contacting your support, than by simply downloading the game again off a torrent site? I've paid for it, after all, and that seems like a pretty direct way to be able to play. Right now, I feel like I'm being punished for having done the right thing.
e: I've dutifully placed a support ticket. I'm off to play Starcraft in the meantime.

Its not an external app.... its part of the game... just like SC2 where you have to login to play.
Why buy it off steam and not directly off Ubisoft?
-
^ Well then that's especially worrying. This game is apparently just broken.
And... seriously? You're asking why I'd prefer to deal more with Ubisoft, given the treatment this game's already received?
