This tweak as far as I know can only be used in WinXP but I could be wrong.
Have you ever noticed your comp slow down a bit when opening files or saving them or recieving files from the net? Well, part of this is down to your computer listing every file it has on it's HDs in an index. The only purpose indexing has is to speed up searches, so if you don't do many searches on your comp, like me (I know where everything I need is), then you can turn it off:
Go to My Computer:
Right click the HD you want to turn indexing off.
Click properties.
Uncheck the box which tells you about indexing (It's on by default).
It'll ask you if you want to turn it off for all folders on the HD. I clicked yes, made sense to me.
The comp will now go through and remove all its indexes. This can take some time, depending on how much crap you have on there, so expect to sit around for a bit if your HD is crammed full.
REMEMBER: This tweak may not even be noticable to some people, but at least on my comp, saving games is quicker, I don't get stupid lag when taking screenshots n stuff, and online play seems to be a lot faster, even with a high ping.
May as well try it out if you don't do many searches

Defragging your harddrive regularly will have much the same effect
-
Indeed, but defrag then this just adds that tiny extra oomph :P
-
It you can not find it, its because ur hard drive is in Fat32 format so u lucked out
-
The best way to stop indexing is to go to "Add/Remove Programs" - then choose "Add/Remove Windows Components" - then uncheck "Indexing Service"
-
You really shouldnt defrag your computer if your running XP all that often. XP is designed to relocate things so that programs you use more often load and run more quickly than programs you dont run often. By defraging your actually slowing down XP in the long run rather than helping it run faster
