(NOTE: This thread is directed at Windows users only. I've no experience with Quicktime issues on a Mac and how they might be resolved. You'll have to ask Bill about that.)
As there have been several problems as of late dealing with older Myst games and Quicktime compatability issues, I thought I'd take a moment to write up a quick readme for resolving this most common of problems with the Myst series.
First off, if you're having a video-related problem with Myst, Myst Masterpiece Edition, or Riven (CD or DVD releases), it is most likely due to a Quicktime version compatability problem. Below I've listed the Myst games using Quicktime technology and the version they use (approximated if unknown):
Myst: released for the PC in 1994, uses Quicktime version 2.x
Riven CD: released 1997, uses Quicktime 2.y (higher than 2.x, but still version 2)
Riven DVD: Released 1998, uses Quicktime 3
Myst Masterpiece Edition: released 1999, uses Quicktime 4
Current Quicktime version available from Apple.com: 5.0.2
Quicktime has some serious problems with reverse compatability in its software, meaning that if you're running Quicktime 5, installing a program that uses Quicktime 2.x will probably cause the program to not operate properly. The solution to this problem is to uninstall any versions of Quicktime HIGHER than the version you are currently attempting to install. After these versions have been uninstalled, uninstall and re-install the game, then re-install the higher versions of Quicktime.
Please note that Myst Masterpiece Edition was released AFTER Riven, and so runs a higher version of Quicktime. If you want to install and play Riven after installing MME, you will first need to uninstall Quicktime 3 (installed with MME) as well as Quicktime 5, and then install Riven, then re-install Quicktime 3 (this can be done without needing to re-install the game, se below), then re-install Quicktime 5.
If you have uninstalled a version of Quicktime (like version 3) which another Myst game requires to run properly, there will be an install file on the CD-ROM to re-install that version of Quicktime. On the Riven DVD, the install file is in the QTWSETUP directory of the DVD-ROM. I would imagine it is in a similar directory for MME. It is not necessary to re-install the other games in order to re-install the version of Quicktime required to play that game.
Also, please note that realMYST does NOT use Quicktime, and that Exile, if it does (never figured that out for certain), uses Quicktime 5, which is freely downloadable from apple.com. However, I've yet to see a Quicktime-related problem crop up with Exile, so this may be a moot point.

FWIW,
On my PowerMac 8500/Newer G3 upgrade with QT 5.02 installed, I can play Myst, Riven (CD version), Myst Masterpiece, and Myst III: Exile. The Mac does use QT on Exile, for the full-screen movies. (I think the cut-screen videos are "Bink" files.) The issues on the PC may have to do with QT/OS version compatibility.

Thanks for the FYI.
I am trying to run Riven with Windows XP with mixed results. The game plays well in terms of video performance, but the sound is either very poor or nonexistent. I have installed the version of QuickTime that comes with the game. I do not have other versions of QuickTime installed.
My sound card is a Philips Harmonic Edge PSC703 card, with Windows XP drivers installed.
I have tried all of the different compatibilty modes XP offers. Here's what I get:
I get almost no sound at all in Windows95 mode and in Windows98/ME mode, except for the ambient sounds. The Red Orb and Cyan introductions, Atrus's opening, and everything before being released by the rebel in order to begin playing, are totally silent. Once I begin to play, I get the ambient sounds but nothing from any of the QuickTime movies.
I do get sound in WindowsNT and in Windows2000 mode, but whenever a QuickTime movie plays, I get a loud, steady popping sound. When the movie stops, the popping stops and the ambient sounds work normally.
I have gone into the QuickTime options and tried the various settings available, but nothing makes any difference.
Does this sound like a known issue to you? If you have any insights as to what this might be, I would appreciate any help you might be able to give. Thanks.

> Myst: released 1994, uses Quicktime version QT16 1.x
Wrong it released date was September 1993 and you have the wrong QT ver there are 3 CD released of Myst game each one have been update with new EXE last ver Myst 1.3 it did come with QT16 ver 2.1.2.59

> Riven CD: released 1997, uses Quicktime 2.y (higher

QT3 may be a joke, but it's still required to run the Riven DVD, so you kind of HAVE to install it, because QT4/5 don't like to play the movies in the game.

The Mac version of Myst was released in September of 1993. The PC version wasn't released until the spring of 1994. I got the date from a Cyan employee, so I would think they know what they're talking about. I'd like to know how you managed to get "QT16 1.x" from my post when I said "version 2.x". My point still stands, the original Myst runs on Quciktime version 2.x, irregardless of the relase version of the Myst CD (1.00, 1.01, 1.02, or 1.03).

Thank you for agreeing with me.

But as I said above, is still necessary to run the game. I've tried without it, and it doesn't work.

Ah. I based the release date off of when the Mac version was released, but I forgot that the PC version was released well prior to the Mac version. I will correct that information.
