Thread: GeForce FX 5200: Optimal settings? | Forums

1. #1
Sorry if this matter has been repeated ad nauseum but I really have a hard time understanding what the hell is going wrong with my settings and can't have a nice fps number.

I recently upgraded from a GeForce 3 Ti200 (64MB) to a GeForce FX 5200 (128MB) and was expecting to have at least decent fps at 1280x960 which is my monitor's native resolution. However the situation is unbearable and I have almost abominal fps in multiplayer games.

My machine is the same as in the past, apart from the new graphics adapter, so why do I get worse fps?

Obviously I'm asking too much from the quality settings, I thought. WRONG! With the default settings from IL2's setup I still get horrible fps, almost never more than 10-15fps, being even less near the ground and in cockpit.

Can someone please tell me his settings if he has the same adapter and/or suggest me a comprehensive IL2 settings guide (for all those funky settings I don't know which to keep and which to disable) to tweak my system to a playable level?

Thank you in advance,
Constantine.

Sorry to say this, but it sounds to me like you just downgraded your graphics card.

I am not an Nvidia guy. Make sure you are using the 45.23 drivers and set IL2 setup to same you had it with ti200. Use OpenGL and 1024x768. Try the settings on high.

You may want to post your Dxdiag too.

You know what, I almost thought of that at the time of my purchase but the Ti200 was at least 4 years old and wasn't DX9-optimized as my current card. At least I was expecting same performance cause the FX has double memory and a faster internal clock. I don't have so astounding problems with other games though at the moment, so that's why I think it's a setup problem.

There is this strange problem, when I setup to 1024x768 my CRT's refresh frequency falls to an unbearable 60Hz. I can't explain that either, did I forget a VSync setting somewhere? Damn, I heard some guys say in other threads that it might be connected with in-game fps. Also OpenGL is not so quicker, I really prefer to use DirectX.

My drivers are the latest ASUS-optimized drivers with a date of April.

Sure.

S! Prof.
I just saw the quote on one of your other posts and I just wanted you to know that the 45.33 drivers are the ones recommended for that video card. Not the 45.23's. Just because Nvidia has released a new driver doesnt make it the best ones for your card. Give those 45.33's a shot. BTW do you have a lot of programs running in the background? Go to your Start/run and type "msconfig" without the "'s. Click the Startup tab and see how many checked boxes you have in there. You should be able to get playable FPS in excellent mode with your setup(20-30). Just dont expext a miracle from that card. I know thats not what you want to hear but its the truth. 5200 is no good when you want to crank the eye candy up..I wouldnt go any higher than 2xAA and 2xAF. There are some other tweaks for Windows that'll help you out. Just keep checking though the forum and you should find em...You could also try turning your water detail and forest detail down a notch in your config to help you squeeze out a few more FPS. You may also try setting your texture compression to S3TC in your IL2 setup file....Hope that helps.

You won't be able to use any AA or AS with that card and have playable fps. I think you should keep them off for now.

Lowering your res will help too. You need to set your desktop at the same res as the game. That is why you are only getting 60fps in game. So, set desktop res to 1024x768 at the highest refresh it will support, then change the game res to the same.

Try the earlier drivers! Boogie is correct. I think the 45.33 are WDM drivers though. Like I said, I am not an Nvidia guy, But recommended driver for IL2 are 45.23/45.33.

S~ Boogie and thanks for the swift response.
I was wondering where did you see I'm running nVIDIA's 45.23 cause I can't deduce that myself from what I see. AFAIR I installed ASUS's latest recommended drivers v56.55 which were available at ASUSTek's site. I thought I should go with those drivers because of the hype (don't know if real) that the best results come out of the OEM's drivers and also because I wanted to try ASUS SmartDoctor with its automatic (or manual) overclocking. This is my last ditch, I'll try to o/c to see if I get a gain from that.

Thanks for that as well. Hm, I have some things that run resident all the time (Norton AV, Spybot resident, etc) but I don't really think they bog my system so much. Frankly seeing them at Task Manager they average on less than 2% of CPU power and occupy less than half of my available 512MB. Anyway, I used to have more or less the same programs running in my old system (with the GeForce 3 Ti200) so I don't see why I get this.

I don't even have AntiAliasing on, that's why it's so puzzling...
Even with Default settings @ 1280x960 I get a horrible <10-15fps which is not what I bargained for.

I'll continue trying, what else can I do?!
But back to my original question:
IS THERE A SITE OR PORTAL OR THREAD WITH COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION ABOUT IL2'S SETUP SETTINGS? The manual says way to little to have a clear look on this matter.

S! I don't see any reason for a drop in performance if you only switched cards unless the 5200 wasn't as good of a card.(sould be better by the look of the specs) Might be driver related. I'm running the ti200 64 in my AMD machiine and was fixing to install the fx5200 also(Thanks for the loan Eagle). I'll run 3dmark03 before and after the swap to see what the performance diff is and post the results.

Ok, So running 3Dmark03 will give you a comparison for 3Dmark03, Not for FB. You may see an increase in 3Dmark03 due to Nvidias optimizations for that benchmark, but you may not see anything or even a drop for FB. FB is an OpenGL game, 3Dmark is for DX.

You should run a benchmark with FB, the Blackdeath track is what most people use.
