In response to ehofish's note about the problems the allies had in destroying the dams:
1. The unit was not disbanded. After the dambusters raid 617 squadron took part in the sinking of the Tirpitz, the destruction of the V-3 weapon before it went operational, and became VERY accurate with the Tallboy(6 ton)s and Grand Slam(10 tons) earthquake bombs. It is currently equipped with the Tornado IDS.
2. The height they needed to drop the bomb was 60ft (less than 19m)
3. The personnell for the squadron were from many countries, England, Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and the were hand-picked by Wing Commander Gibson, the squadrons leader. During the rest of the war the squadron became home to a lot of aircrews who, for whatever reason, didn't wish to be taken of operations. They were, as such, a highly expierienced squadron, used for small pinpoint raids, and were reffered to as a 'sniper squadron'
I'm sorry if this sounded a little pedantic, but i've been guilty of hero-worship of this squadron for more than a decade now, so i felt the need to do this.
If anyone is interested in this subject, i'd strongly recommend reading:
'Enemy Coast Ahead' by Guy Gibson, which details not only the dambusters raid, but the events that lead to his leading the raid.
'The Dambusters" by Paul Brickhill, this details the struggle te scientist had in developing the bomb used against the dams, and carries on detailing the missions of 617 squadron, up until the end of the war.
thanks for lettin me have my rant
If they ever put a lancaster in il-2 you'll never get me out of it.

taxloss, thanks for straightening me out. its been a while since i saw the TV program, and you obviously know much more about the subject than they could put in a 1 hour show (the first half of the show was about the scientist you mentioned). fascinating stuff!

This post has made me go Dam crazy
I've made three dams since I read this last night. I wish I could post pics of them but I haven't a place to upload them to. Man making dams is a lot of fun.
