I'm curious as to why my game works without the CD being inserted in the drive.

The offline version won't work in this manner, but the online version will?

Can someone explain why this happens?

perhaps so you can let your friend borrow the cd and "invite" them on to uru live?

In Prime (offline) the CD is used to authenticate you as a valid owner of the game. In Live you registered your CD key so that acts as proof of purchase hence no need for CD.
