Thread: Autopilot crash landing | Forums

    Hi
I have noticed that if I engage the autopilot on approach to a carrier it will land the plane (as long as I put the gear and hook down manually). However, if I do the same on approach to an airfield it will follow the glidepath down until just before I reach the runway, then suddenly fall out the sky and crash just short of the runway. Is this realistic or a bug?

It is realistic. Any pilot not competent to make his own landings is killed by the autopilot to make room in the airforce for better pilots.

basically on air field approaches i've noticed it disengages at the end of the glide slope, you'll notice this by watching the horizontal bar, when it disappears, the autopilot disengages as well, just steady the plane up and add throttle if need be.

its quite easy to land using the ILS though, just takes a bit of pratice and you'll be going great guns.

    LOL Fennec

In real life I don't think aircraft can do a smooth land with auto-pilot engaged, I know this for transport aircraft, Jet pilots correct me if I'm wrong.

On ILS you follow the glide slope which guide you for the line up but which will leave you alone till you are over the runway.
    So your plane simply fall.

I remember a rookie pilot that mentioned:
" the auto-pilot landing was a little "hard" on this aircraft "

    The instructor replied :

    " Which auto-landing ??? You idiot !!!"

    Also, I've got a confirmation.

It seems that only Heavy Airline airplane have an auto-landing system.
